by Shopify API 13 Oct 2024

Introduction

A devastating fire broke out yesterday near Formentera Island, Spain, resulting in the destruction and subsequent sinking of a 27-meter superyacht named "Irmao." The incident, which happened on August 12th, drew attention as onlookers witnessed the yacht engulfed in flames for several hours. Reports indicate that there were five crew members and twelve passengers onboard at the time of the fire.

Inferno on the Waters

Videos captured during the incident show the raging fire tearing through the yacht, leaving only its skeletal frame behind. The inferno reportedly engulfed the vessel within minutes, transforming it into a colossal fireball. Thick black smoke billowed high into the sky, casting a shadow over the ill-fated yacht.

A Miraculous Rescue

Thanks to the swift action of local firefighters, all seventeen individuals on board were rescued. A private boat had managed to save everyone before the firefighters arrived at the scene. Only one Spanish national, a 39-year-old man, suffered minor burns and required hospital treatment. Fortunately, there have been no reports of fatalities or serious injuries resulting from the incident.

A Mysterious Accident

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and there have been no reports of any injuries or casualties. Later that day, the Spanish Coast Guard confirmed that the "Irmao" had sunk near Punta de Sa Pedrera beach, close to Formentera's natural landmark. They shared a statement and released a video showing their boat, Acrux, towing the damaged superyacht further out to sea before it disappeared beneath the waves.

A Beach of Fame and Misfortune

Punta de Sa Pedrera beach, where the sinking occurred, is considered one of the best sandy stretches near Formentera Island. It has recently attracted attention as actor Leonardo DiCaprio was spotted partying here. The beach is also home to renowned bars and restaurants like El Tiburon and Beso Beach.

A Yacht with a Legendary Owner?

According to an unverified local report, the superyacht "Irmao" belongs to Spanish poker shark Diego Gomez Gonzalez, also known as "The Lion." The Olive Press has previously reported that Gonzalez earned the nickname after donning a full lion suit at the 2012 European Poker Tour in Prague. It is currently unknown if Gonzalez was aboard the yacht or if it was being rented at the time of the incident.

A History of Tragedy near Formentera

Exactly one year ago, the 45-meter superyacht "Aria SF" was destroyed in a major fire near Formentera. The hull sank near Martinez Cove, and several months later, the wreckage was salvaged and transported to a mainland scrapyard.

Conclusion

The destruction and sinking of the superyacht "Irmao" near Formentera serve as a tragic reminder of the unpredictable dangers that can befall luxurious seafaring vessels. The cause of the fire remains a mystery, and authorities continue to investigate the incident.
