Ripple Boats: A New Era of Remote Electric Yachts

by JLMMARINE 14 Oct 2024

As the world becomes increasingly focused on sustainable solutions, Norwegian yacht manufacturer Frydenbø Marine has joined forces with tech startup Pascal to bring us Ripple Boats, an exciting new brand of remote electric yachts that promise to deliver the thrill of sailing without compromising on accessibility, experience, or the environment.

Frydenbø Marine and Pascal share a common vision for the future of yachting, and together they are developing a new generation of electric day cruisers with global ambitions. By combining their expertise, resources, and passion for the environment, these two companies are ready to launch Ripple Boats.

Frydenbø Marine, one of the largest shipbuilders in Northern Europe with its own factory in Poland, has a legendary heritage and a reputation for excellence in the yachting industry. In addition to distributing well-known brands like Zodiac, they also cover Nordkap, Sting, and Airborne. Their collaboration ensures high-quality manufacturing capabilities, enabling the establishment of a lightweight asset company with high-speed and low investment costs.

On the other hand, Pascal, headquartered in Oslo, is a rapidly growing yacht tech startup that is developing an energy-efficient solution for leisure yachts. They have developed a technology that significantly reduces water resistance and extends the range of the yacht without the need for more complex systems.

Earlier this year, Pascal announced a successful fundraising round led by Ocean Zero, raising €4.6 million (CNY 36.5 million) to bring their electric foiling technology to the market. Ocean Zero specializes in investing in innovative companies that have the potential to eliminate emissions in maritime transportation. Their portfolio includes electric hydrofoil boat manufacturer Candela, electric outboard motor and battery systems manufacturer Flux Marine, and innovative wind sail system developer Ayro.

"We believe Pascal has the disruptive potential to completely eliminate fossil fuel consumption in passenger ships, workboats, ferries, and even the largest commercial vessels at sea," said Stephen Petranek, technology editor.

With Pascal's unique AirHull technology, which pumps air between the water and the hull, resulting in significantly reduced energy consumption at high speeds, this yacht tech startup is set to revolutionize the industry. By compressing air with fans to create an air cushion, similar to traditional SES technology, the AirHull utilizes a special hull design and flexible wing system to maintain the air cavity. This reduces water friction by minimizing the wetted surface area of the hull, allowing the electric boats to achieve long-range and high-speed capabilities.

The hull design combines the characteristics of catamarans and monohulls, providing stability, deck space, and the efficiency of the air-cushioned hull. The entire system is integrated and regulated by a control system, ensuring smooth and efficient navigation. A multitude of sensors collect data on the boat's operation, and machine learning continuously improves the algorithms of the navigation control system. Wireless software upgrades further enhance the performance of the boat over time. This platform architecture is scalable for boats ranging from 6 to 30 meters, optimized for electric vessels but also compatible with hybrid and diesel propulsion systems, making it ready for future hydrogen applications.

Focused on sustainability, Ripple Boats is led by CEO Stian Gulla and CCO Nathaniel Frithiof, who aim to create a sustainable yachting brand that puts the joy of sailing at the forefront of the experience. They plan to design and manufacture the next generation of remote electric yachts for the leisure market, utilizing Pascal's innovative foiling technology to extend the range without compromising safety or accessibility.

The first model will be a 10-meter electric day cruiser expertly designed by Thorup Design Studio in Norway, catering to various water activities that families and friends can enjoy. Spacious and configurable seating arrangements, user-friendly technology (such as automatic anchoring, remote monitoring, and wireless updates), and advanced safety features ensure that modern boat owners can relax on the water without worry. The brand's overall concept is to create a simple, easy-to-maintain yacht experience.

Upon the announcement of Ripple Boats, CEO Stian Gulla expressed his excitement: "I am thrilled to announce the launch of the Ripple brand! What truly sets us apart in the startup space is our ability to combine Pascal's innovation and range-extending technology with Frydenbø's industry expertise and manufacturing assets, allowing us to rapidly bring unique, high-quality electric yachts to the market. Our goal over the coming years is to build a range of models in the 6-11 meters category, with a focus on international sales beyond the Scandinavian 'home market.'"

The leisure yachting industry and electrification are at a turning point, with changing consumer sentiments, decreasing battery costs, and rapid investments from both established companies and startups. Ripple Boats combines the innovation and fast-paced nature of a startup with the reliability and quality of an experienced shipyard. They're excited to showcase what they are capable of building.

Ripple Boats represents the fusion of expertise, innovation, and environmental consciousness, making it the first electric yacht brand to be established through a collaboration between a respected shipbuilder and an innovative startup.
