"The Bayesian": One of the Safest Yachts in the World According to TIS President

by JLMMARINE 29 Oct 2024

In a recent interview with Evening Mail, Giovanni Costanti, President of The Italian Sea Group (TIS), addressed the sinking of the "Bayesian" yacht that sparked widespread concern. Despite being built under the leadership of Fabio Perini in 2008, Costanti found it necessary to defend the legacy of Perini Navi, a brand acquired by TIS in December 2021.

Costanti Defends the Bayesian's Integrity

Costanti vehemently defended the structural integrity and craftsmanship of the 56-meter "Bayesian" yacht during the interview. He pointed out that the sinking was not due to any structural failure but a consequence of human error, particularly the actions of the crew led by New Zealand Captain James Catfield. In essence, Costanti believes there was insufficient management of the emergency situation.

Preventive Measures Overlooked

He underlined that the storm had been forecasted, and therefore the captain should have taken all necessary preventive measures, such as sealing the hull and deck, closing all doors and hatches, and following emergency procedures to protect the guests on board. According to Costanti, these measures were not taken. He pointed out that starting the engine, lifting anchor, and facing the bow toward the storm could have averted the disaster.

Throughout the interview, Costanti addressed doubts and discussions that had been circulating on social media recently. He mentioned that the Termini Imerese prosecutor's office, leading the investigation, is expected to provide accurate information about any potential responsibilities.

Quality of Perini Navi's Yachts Assured

Costanti also attempted to reassure the public about the unquestionable build quality of Perini Navi yachts, which he said had withstood hurricanes like Katrina. He stated that a brief storm like the one that hit the Italian coast was not enough to cause a shipwreck. He described the "Bayesian" as "one of the safest yachts in the world", implying that it would only take water in the event of improper emergency management.

In conclusion, Costanti emphasized that the weather conditions were not especially extreme and noted that Sir Robert, the captain of a nearby ship, had faced no issues in dealing with the situation. According to him, proper management could have led to a different result.

He brought up the substantial damage the extensive discussion about the sinking had caused to Perini Navi's reputation. With speculations about supposed flaws in the yacht's design and construction, he stated, "If they say the mast broke (in fact, the mast did not break), if experts deem it dangerous... we're not joking. Our image has been greatly damaged, and our stocks have fallen. We are evaluating possible actions to protect our image and the reputation of Perini Navi."
