9 Inches Propeller Safety Guard for 9.9HP to 20HP Outboard Motors

Fitment answer

Fits the exact models and ranges listed below

Match key: Propeller diameter decides the fit: this 9" cage encloses propellers up to 8.5" in diameter on a standard 9.9-20 HP gearcase, so measure the propeller rather than reading horsepower alone.

Primary reference
PG0090
Product form
Universal bolt-on propeller safety guard (two-piece cage)
Size
9" nominal guard, propellers up to 8.5" diameter

Standard-gearcase applications, 9.9-20 HP
Brand Model Rated HP Stroke Notes
Mercury / Mariner All 9.9-20 HP models 9.9-20 2- & 4-Stroke Standard gearcase. Big Foot and Command Thrust gearcases take a larger propeller and need the 11" guard.
Yamaha All 9.9-20 HP models 9.9-20 2- & 4-Stroke Standard gearcase. High Thrust (T-series) runs an 11.75" class propeller and needs the 11" guard.
Johnson / Evinrude All 9.9-20 HP models 9.9-20 2- & 4-Stroke Standard gearcase. High-thrust and sail-drive style propellers need the 11" guard.
Honda All 9.9-20 HP models 9.9-20 4-Stroke Standard gearcase. Power Thrust (BFP) versions need the 11" guard.
Suzuki All 9.9-20 HP models 9.9-20 2- & 4-Stroke Standard gearcase. The factory high-thrust 10" propeller option needs the 11" guard.
Tohatsu / Nissan All 9.9-20 HP models 9.9-20 2- & 4-Stroke Standard gearcase. The high-thrust four-blade 10" propeller option needs the 11" guard.

Year is not the primary fitment key. The guard clamps around the lower unit, so the deciding numbers are propeller diameter and gearcase type, not model year. Big Foot, Command Thrust, High Thrust and Power Thrust gearcases are outside this listing; those owners should move up to the 11" propeller safety guard.

Easy-to-Miss Differences

  • Propeller diameter beats horsepower. Many standard 9.9-20 HP outboards leave the factory with a 9.2"-9.25" propeller, which is wider than the 8.5" this cage encloses. Measure blade tip to blade tip across the hub before ordering.
  • Big-gearcase versions are excluded. Big Foot, Command Thrust, Yamaha High Thrust, Honda Power Thrust and the four-blade high-thrust propeller options run 9.25" to 11.75" propellers and require the 11" guard instead.
  • Installation is permanent. The cage bolts through the cavitation plate and skeg, so the holes stay in the lower unit even after the guard is removed.
  • Listed size and weight describe the shipping package. 32 x 29 x 18 cm and 1.495 kg are carton figures, not the moulded cage dimensions.
  • A cage changes water flow. Boats fitted with a guard can lose some top speed, and propeller pitch or diameter may need rethinking for the same cruise RPM.
  • Colour is functional. Safety Yellow is chosen for underwater visibility, not styling, which matters most on rental and family boats.

Installation Notes

Professional installation is recommended. The outline below covers the parts supplied in the box.

  1. Shut the engine down, tilt or remove the outboard so the lower unit is clear of the water, and isolate the ignition before working near the propeller.
  2. Bring the two cage halves around the lower unit, one section above the cavitation plate and one below the skeg, and centre them on the propeller.
  3. Rotate the propeller by hand so clearance is even all round, then mark the hole positions through the guard onto the cavitation plate and skeg.
  4. Remove the guard and drill the marked holes with a bit matched to the supplied stainless bolts.
  5. Refit both halves and draw the stainless bolts and nuts up evenly, working across the cavitation plate before the skeg fixing.
  6. Turn the propeller through a full revolution again to be sure nothing touches, then re-tighten the fasteners after the first outing.

Tightening figures are not published for this accessory, so follow the printed sheet in the box rather than a generic torque value.

FAQ

How do I know the 9" guard suits my outboard?

Measure your propeller diameter across the blade tips. Anything up to 8.5" fits inside this cage on a standard 9.9-20 HP gearcase. Wider propellers and all Big Foot, Command Thrust, High Thrust or Power Thrust gearcases need the 11" size.

What does the cage actually protect?

It puts a rigid barrier between the blades and anything alongside the lower unit, which reduces strike risk for swimmers and marine life and shields the propeller from rocks and submerged debris in shallow water.

Does fitting it require drilling?

Yes. The guard bolts to the cavitation plate and skeg, so holes are drilled in the lower unit. That makes it a permanent modification, which is why a dry, well-supported engine and careful marking matter.

Will the guard slow the boat down?

Any cage adds wetted area around the propeller, so a small loss of top speed is normal. Trim the engine correctly and, on planing hulls, reassess propeller pitch if cruise RPM shifts.

What is the guard made of?

The cage is moulded in rigid polypropylene in Safety Yellow for underwater visibility, and it ships with stainless steel mounting hardware for corrosion resistance in salt water.

Is this an OEM part?

No. It is an aftermarket universal accessory built to comparable-grade material standards, cross-referenced to PG0090 and the NorthBoat 9" guard. Engine brand names appear only to describe compatible applications.

My engine is a 25 HP or larger. What do I need?

Step up within the propeller safety guard range, where larger cages cover heavier gearcases and wider propellers.
