Installation Guide
-
Safety First: Disconnect the battery and remove the spark plug wires before starting work.
-
Access the Lower Unit: Remove the bolts securing the lower unit (gearcase) to the engine’s midsection and carefully lower it.
-
Remove Old Pump: Locate and unbolt the water pump housing on top of the gearcase. Remove the housing, impeller, and wear plate.
-
Clean Surfaces: Thoroughly clean the mounting surface on the gearcase and the driveshaft spline area.
-
Install New Components: Place the new wear plate and gasket onto the gearcase. Slide the woodruff key into the driveshaft slot.
-
Install Impeller: Align the new impeller with the key and slide it down. Use a twisting motion in the direction of engine rotation (clockwise) to seat the blades inside the new housing.
-
Secure Housing: Apply a light coat of marine grease to the inside of the housing, then slide it down over the impeller. Secure it with the new bolts and tighten to the manufacturer's torque specifications.
-
Reassemble: Reinstall the lower unit, ensuring the driveshaft, shift shaft, and water tube are correctly aligned. Test the engine with a proper water supply to verify cooling.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this kit fits my engine?
This kit is designed for Johnson/Evinrude 60-75 HP 3-cylinder engines made between 1979-2001, and 60-70 HP 4-stroke models from 1998 and newer. Please check the "Compatible Engine Models" table to verify your specific model and year.
What are the signs my water pump needs to be replaced?
Common signs of a failing water pump include the engine overheating, a weak or inconsistent water stream from the "telltale" outlet, and visible cracking or damage to the old impeller upon inspection.
How often should I replace my water pump impeller?
For optimal engine protection, it is recommended to inspect the impeller annually and replace the kit every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of use, depending on operating conditions (e.g., saltwater vs. freshwater).
