Installation Guide
- Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.
- Drain the gear oil from the lower unit (gearcase).
- Unbolt and carefully remove the lower unit from the outboard's driveshaft housing.
- Remove the bolts securing the water pump housing and lift it off.
- Make a note of the old impeller’s vane orientation before removing it.
- Remove the old impeller, gaskets, wear plate, and any other seals from the housing.
- Thoroughly clean the driveshaft and all surfaces of the pump housing, removing any debris or corrosion.
- Install the new gaskets and wear plate included in the kit.
- Lightly lubricate the interior of the pump housing and the new impeller with marine grease.
- Slide the new impeller onto the driveshaft, twisting it in the direction of normal engine rotation to bend the vanes correctly.
- Reinstall the water pump housing and tighten the bolts to the manufacturer’s recommended torque.
- Reattach the lower unit, refill with fresh gear oil, and reconnect the battery. Test the engine on a water supply to confirm a strong tell-tale stream.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this kit fits my Suzuki engine?
This kit is specifically designed for Suzuki models DF60, DF70, DT90, and DT100 from 1998 through 2007. The surest way to confirm fitment is to verify that your existing part number matches our stated cross-references: 17400-87E04, 17400-87E03, or Sierra 18-3254.
What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?
Key signs include the engine overheating at idle or low speeds, a weak or non-existent water stream from the "telltale" outlet, or finding the old impeller's rubber vanes are cracked, brittle, or have taken a permanent set.
How often should I replace the water pump impeller?
As a critical part of preventative maintenance, you should inspect the impeller annually and plan to replace it every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of use. More frequent replacement is recommended for boats operating in saltwater or debris-heavy water.
