Installation Guide
- Disconnect the negative battery cable for safety.
- Place the outboard in neutral and remove the bolts securing the lower unit (gearcase). Carefully separate the lower unit from the upper housing.
- Locate the water pump assembly on top of the lower unit. Remove the bolts to lift the pump cover.
- Take note of the blade orientation before lifting the old impeller off the driveshaft.
- Clean any sediment or corrosion from the inside of the pump housing and from the wear plate.
- Lightly lubricate the new impeller with marine-grade grease or a soap-and-water solution.
- Slide the new impeller onto the driveshaft while turning the shaft clockwise to properly seat the blades inside the housing.
- Reinstall the pump cover and torque the bolts to the manufacturer's specified value.
- Realign the lower unit, ensuring the driveshaft and water tube are correctly seated, and secure it with its bolts.
- Reconnect the battery cable. Start the engine using a water supply to verify water is pumping correctly from the tell-tale outlet.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this impeller fits my Yamaha 2HP engine?
Refer to the "Compatible Engine Models" table. This impeller is specifically for Yamaha 2HP 2-stroke models manufactured between 1984 and 2002. Cross-reference your engine's model and year to ensure a match.
What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?
Common symptoms include the engine overheating, a weak or intermittent water stream from the tell-tale port, or a total lack of water flow, which indicates the cooling system is not functioning.
How often should I replace the impeller?
For preventative maintenance, it is recommended to inspect the impeller annually and replace it every 1-2 seasons or after every 100-200 hours of operation, particularly if you frequently run your engine in saltwater or sandy/silty conditions.
