Installation Guide
-
Safety First: Disconnect the battery and shift the outboard to neutral.
-
Access the Pump: Remove the lower unit (gearcase) from the outboard's driveshaft housing assembly.
-
Remove Old Pump: Unbolt and remove the existing water pump housing to access the impeller. Note the orientation of the old parts.
-
Clean Surfaces: Thoroughly clean the mounting base and driveshaft, removing any old gasket material or debris.
-
Install New Components: Place the new gasket and pump plate onto the gearcase.
-
Install Impeller: Slide the new impeller onto the driveshaft. Apply a light coat of marine grease to the inside of the pump housing to ease installation.
-
Install Housing: Press the new pump housing down over the impeller while turning the driveshaft clockwise to set the vanes correctly.
-
Secure Housing: Fasten the housing with the new bolts, tightening them evenly to the manufacturer's torque specifications.
-
Reassemble: Reinstall the lower unit, refill the gearcase with fresh lubricant, and reconnect the battery.
-
Test Operation: Start the engine in water and verify a strong, consistent stream of water from the tell-tale outlet.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this kit will fit my Johnson engine?
Verify that your engine is a 2-stroke 25 HP (manufactured between 1977–1983) or a 35 HP (1976–1980). The most reliable method is to cross-reference the OEM part number, which should be 389611 or 0389611.
What are the signs my water pump needs replacing?
The most common signs are engine overheating, an intermittent or weak water stream from the "tell-tale" cooling outlet, or discovering the impeller is cracked, brittle, or has broken vanes during a routine inspection.
How often should I replace the water pump impeller?
For preventative maintenance, we recommend inspecting the impeller annually and replacing it every 1-2 years. Replacement frequency should increase with heavy use, especially in saltwater or in water with high levels of sand or silt.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials. Production is done in an ISO9002-certified facility, and each batch is inspected for consistent performance.
