Installation Guide
Follow these general steps to replace your water pump impeller. Professional installation is recommended.
-
Disconnect the Battery: Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental starting.
-
Drain the Gearcase: Place a drain pan under the lower unit and remove the gearcase oil drain and vent plugs to drain the lubricant.
-
Remove the Lower Unit: Disconnect the shift linkage (if applicable) and remove the bolts securing the lower unit (gearcase) to the engine's midsection. Carefully lower the unit.
-
Access the Water Pump: The water pump housing is located on top of the lower unit. Remove the bolts securing the pump housing cover.
-
Inspect and Remove Old Parts: Take note of the order of all components. Remove the old impeller, wear plate, gaskets, and O-rings. Clean all mating surfaces thoroughly.
-
Install the New Impeller: Lightly grease the new wear plate and gaskets. Slide the new impeller onto the driveshaft, turning the shaft clockwise to bend the vanes in the correct direction as you press it into the housing.
-
Reassemble the Pump: Install the new gaskets and O-rings. Secure the water pump housing cover and torque the bolts to the manufacturer's specification.
-
Reinstall the Lower Unit: Carefully guide the lower unit back into place, ensuring the driveshaft, water tube, and shift shaft align properly. Reinstall and tighten the mounting bolts.
-
Refill Gearcase Oil: Fill the gearcase with fresh marine gear lube through the drain plug hole until it flows out of the vent hole. Reinstall the vent and drain plugs.
-
Test the System: Reconnect the battery. Start the engine using a water source (flushing muffs or in the water) and check for a steady stream of water from the "telltale" outlet.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this kit fits my specific engine?
The most reliable way is to match your engine's serial number to the ranges listed in the "Compatible Engine Models" table. While the kit fits a wide range of 30-70 HP Mercury/Mariner outboards, the serial number is the key to confirming a perfect fit.
What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?
Common symptoms include the engine overheating at idle or low speeds, a weak or non-existent water stream from the "telltale" outlet, and in some cases, a high-temperature alarm from your console gauges.
How often should I replace my impeller?
As a general maintenance guideline, it's recommended to inspect your impeller annually and replace it every 1-2 years, depending on usage (especially in saltwater or sandy/silty conditions). Proactive replacement prevents overheating and potential engine damage.
