1. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental starting.
2. Remove the lower unit (gear case) from the outboard motor by unbolting it from the midsection.
3. Locate and unbolt the water pump housing, typically secured with four to six bolts. Remove the housing cover to expose the impeller.
4. Note the rotational direction of the existing impeller's blades before removal. This will help with correct installation of the new part.
5. Slide the old impeller off the drive shaft. Be sure to remove the small drive key from the shaft if it doesn't come out with the impeller.
6. Thoroughly clean the inside of the pump housing and the wear plate. Inspect for scoring, warping, or grooves and replace if necessary.
7. Lightly lubricate the interior of the pump housing and the new impeller with marine grease. Do not use oil or non-marine lubricants.
8. Install the drive key into the driveshaft keyway. Slide the new impeller onto the shaft while turning the driveshaft clockwise to correctly flex the blades.
9. Reinstall the water pump housing, ensuring any gaskets or o-rings are properly seated. Torque the bolts to the manufacturer's specifications.
10. Reattach the lower unit to the outboard, making sure the driveshaft and water tube are correctly aligned. Securely tighten all bolts.
11. Reconnect the battery. Before launching, test the engine using a flush-muff attachment to confirm water is pumping from the tell-tale port.
