Installation Guide
- Disconnect the battery and remove the engine cover.
- Place the outboard motor in neutral and remove the lower unit (gearcase) by unbolting it from the engine leg.
- Locate the water pump assembly on top of the lower unit and remove the housing bolts.
- Slide the water pump housing up and off the driveshaft to expose the old impeller.
- Take note of the blade orientation, then remove the old impeller. It may be necessary to pry it off or cut it if it is seized.
- Clean any debris from the driveshaft, pump housing, and wear plate. Inspect the housing and plate for grooves or damage and replace if necessary.
- Apply a light coat of marine grease to the new impeller and the inside of the pump housing.
- Slide the new impeller onto the driveshaft with a twisting motion, ensuring the blades are oriented in the correct rotational direction.
- Reinstall the pump housing, making sure the impeller blades are correctly seated inside.
- Torque the housing bolts to the manufacturer-specified values.
- Re-attach the lower unit to the outboard motor.
- Reconnect the battery, supply water to the engine using flushing muffs, and start the engine to verify a strong water stream from the tell-tale port.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this impeller will fit my engine?
First, carefully check your engine's model, rated horsepower, and manufacturing year against our "Compatible Engine Models" table. Next, you can verify your existing part number matches one of the numbers in our "Part Number Cross-Reference" list. For assistance identifying your engine, use the Yamaha guides linked above the compatibility table.
How often should I replace my water pump impeller?
To prevent engine overheating and maintain cooling system performance, we recommend inspecting the impeller annually and replacing it every 1-2 years or 100-200 hours of use. Replacement frequency may vary based on operating conditions like saltwater use or running in sandy or silty waters.
What are the signs of a failing impeller?
Common symptoms include a weak or non-existent water stream from the engine's tell-tale port, frequent engine overheating alarms, steam from the exhaust, or a noticeable reduction in overall engine performance. A worn impeller cannot pump a sufficient volume of water to keep the engine cool.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials. Production is done in an ISO9002-certified facility, and each batch is inspected for consistent performance.
How fast do you ship and how much does it cost?
We offer fast global shipping—typically 5–15 days worldwide—and standard shipping is free. Expedited options are available at checkout depending on your location.
What is your warranty and return policy?
This product includes a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use. If something goes wrong, contact our support team with your order details. Returns are accepted within our standard return window (unused & in original condition); please see our policy page or reach out for instructions.
