Installation Guide

Always consult your engine's service manual before performing maintenance. The following is a general guide:

  1. Disconnect the battery and remove the spark plug leads for safety.
  2. Place a drain pan under the lower unit and remove the gear lube drain screw to empty the oil.
  3. Remove the bolts securing the lower unit (gearcase) to the engine.
  4. Carefully separate the lower unit from the upper housing. Note the position of the driveshaft and shift shaft.
  5. Locate the water pump housing on the lower unit and unbolt it.
  6. Slide the housing up to expose the old impeller. Remove the old impeller and the drive pin from the shaft.
  7. Clean any debris or corrosion from inside the housing and from the base plate.
  8. Install the new drive pin into the driveshaft. Align the new impeller's keyway with the pin and slide it down.
  9. Lubricate the inside of the housing and reinstall it over the impeller. Be sure to turn the driveshaft clockwise to bend the vanes correctly.
  10. Reassemble the water pump housing, ensuring all seals are correctly seated.
  11. Reattach the lower unit to the engine, making sure the driveshaft and shift shaft align properly.
  12. Refill the lower unit with fresh gear lube and test the engine on a water supply to confirm proper cooling.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

Q: How do I know if this impeller fits my Mercury outboard?
A: First, check your engine's HP and year against the compatibility list. The most reliable method is to match your engine's serial number with the ranges specified in the "Compatible Engine Models" table. We provide a link to a Mercury serial number guide to help you verify your model.

Q: What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?
A: Common signs include the engine overheating at idle or low speeds, a weak or non-existent water stream from the "tell-tale" outlet, and a dry, cracked, or brittle appearance on the old impeller upon inspection. A damaged impeller cannot effectively pump water, leading to poor engine cooling.

Q: How often should I replace my outboard's impeller?
A: As a preventative maintenance measure, it is recommended to inspect your impeller annually and replace it every 1-2 years or after every 100-200 hours of use. Replacement frequency may depend on your operating conditions, especially in saltwater or sandy/silty water, which causes faster wear.

Q: OEM vs. Aftermarket?
A: This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials. Production is done in an ISO9002-certified facility, and each batch is inspected for consistent performance.

Q: How fast do you ship and how much does it cost?
A: We offer fast global shipping—typically 5–15 days worldwide—and standard shipping is free. Expedited options are available at checkout depending on your location.

Q: What is your warranty and return policy?
A: This product includes a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use. If something goes wrong, contact our support team with your order details. Returns are accepted within our standard return window (unused & in original condition); please see our policy page or reach out for instructions.
