Installation Guide
- Place a suitable drain pan below the existing oil filter to catch any spills.
- Use a properly sized oil filter wrench to turn the old filter counter-clockwise and remove it from the engine.
- Wipe the filter mounting base on the engine with a clean, lint-free cloth to ensure the surface is free of old gasket material and debris.
- Lightly lubricate the rubber gasket on the new oil filter with a thin film of fresh engine oil.
- Carefully thread the new filter onto the mounting base by hand, turning it clockwise until the gasket makes contact with the seating surface.
- Tighten the filter an additional 3/4 to 1 full turn by hand. Do not use a wrench to tighten, as this can damage the filter or seal.
- After refilling the engine with oil, run it for several minutes and carefully check for any leaks around the filter.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this fits my engine?
This filter is designed for a wide range of Suzuki, Mercury, and Johnson/Evinrude 4-stroke outboards from 150-350 HP. The most reliable method for confirming fitment is to match your current filter's part number to the numbers in our "Part Number Cross-Reference" table. You can also use the provided brand-specific links to find part diagrams for your engine model.
How often should I replace my outboard oil filter?
For optimal engine health, the oil filter should be replaced every time you change your engine oil. Standard service intervals are typically every 100 hours of use or annually, whichever comes first. Always refer to your engine's owner's manual for the maintenance schedule recommended by the manufacturer.
What are the signs of a failing oil filter?
A clogged or faulty oil filter can restrict oil flow, potentially leading to low oil pressure warnings, a noticeable decrease in engine performance, or oil leaks originating from the filter's seal. If you notice any of these symptoms, inspect the oil filter immediately.
The thread size in my manual is different. Should I still use this filter?
No. This filter uses a 20mm x 1.5 thread. If your engine or service manual specifies a different thread size (like 3/4" x 16), this part is not compatible. Using a filter with the incorrect thread size can lead to severe oil leaks and catastrophic engine damage.
