How to Match This Part

This aftermarket camshaft position sensor replaces Mercury Marine 880609, which Mercury later listed as 8M0011987 and then as 8M0233140. It mounts in the cylinder head / camshaft cover group and reports camshaft angle to the engine control module so ignition and injection timing stay synchronised on the Mercury and Mariner applications listed below.

Match this part in this order:
1. Number on the sensor you remove — 880609, 8M0011987, or 8M0233140
2. Engine serial number — Mercury / Mariner outboards: plate on the transom bracket or cowl; Mercury Racing QC4V: engine identification plate
3. Model family and horsepower against the compatibility table, then compare the body shape with the product images

Identify the sensor by form as well as by number. The unit is a one-piece moulded black plastic body with a cylindrical probe barrel, a pre-fitted brown O-ring on the barrel, a single flat mounting ear with a metal bushing for one retaining bolt, and a side-facing sealed electrical connector with a locking tab. If your original sensor looks different or carries an unrelated Mercury number, do not use this part even if the horsepower overlaps.

Part Number Cross-Reference

Use these verified numbers to confirm you have the correct camshaft position sensor. Brand names and OEM numbers are for identification only.

Type Brand Part Number Notes
OEM Mercury Marine 880609 Original equipment sensor assembly
OEM Mercury Marine 8M0011987 Supersedes 880609; later superseded by 8M0233140
OEM Mercury Marine 8M0233140 Current catalogue number (functional replacement)

This is an aftermarket part manufactured by JLM Marine. It is not sold as a genuine Mercury Marine or Mariner component.

Compatible Engine Models

Confirm your engine model and serial number in the table below. Mercury changed this sensor number during production, so the serial range and the number on the removed sensor are the decisive checks. For Mercury owners: Mercury Serial Number Guide and Mercury Parts Diagrams. Mariner-badged engines that use the same Mercury OEM number are covered the same way.

If your serial number sits near a range boundary, confirm the number stamped on the sensor you are removing before ordering.

Installation Guide

  1. 1Turn the ignition off and disconnect the negative battery cable before touching any engine wiring.
  2. 2Locate the sensor in the cylinder head or camshaft cover using your engine parts diagram, then release the locking tab and unplug the harness connector.
  3. 3Remove the single retaining bolt from the mounting ear and withdraw the old sensor straight out of its bore. Confirm the old O-ring comes out with it and is not left inside the head.
  4. 4Wipe the bore clean of oil and debris, compare the old and new sensors side by side, and lightly lubricate the new O-ring with clean engine oil.
  5. 5Push the new sensor fully home without twisting the O-ring, align the mounting ear, then fit and tighten the bolt to the torque given in your Mercury service manual.
  6. 6Reconnect the harness until the latch clicks, reconnect the battery, clear stored fault codes with a marine diagnostic tool if needed, then start the engine and confirm a steady idle and clean throttle response.

Note: Professional installation is recommended for camshaft position sensors on EFI and Verado powerheads.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I confirm this fits my engine? +

Start with the number on your old sensor. If it reads 880609, 8M0011987, or 8M0233140, this is the correct replacement family. Then check your engine serial number against the ranges in the compatibility table, and finally compare the body shape, single mounting ear, O-ring barrel, and connector housing with the product images.

My old part number is 880609 but the dealer quoted 8M0233140. Is this the same sensor? +

Yes. Mercury superseded 880609 to 8M0011987 and later to 8M0233140. A superseded number is the functional replacement for the earlier one. Minor moulding or marking differences between production runs are normal as long as the barrel, O-ring, mounting ear, and connector match your original part.

What are the symptoms of a failing camshaft position sensor? +

Typical complaints are hard starting, a rough or hunting idle, misfires under load, sudden power limiting, and a stored camshaft position sensor fault code. Because the same symptoms can come from a chafed harness or a corroded connector, inspect the wiring and the pins before replacing the sensor.

Is this an OEM or aftermarket part? +

This is an aftermarket replacement manufactured by JLM Marine. It is not a genuine Mercury Marine part. OEM numbers are listed only for cross-matching.

Important Notes

  • Verify that the product images and the number on your original sensor match 880609, 8M0011987, or 8M0233140, including barrel, O-ring, mounting ear, and connector housing. If anything differs, do not proceed even if your engine model appears in the table.
  • Mercury lists this sensor across several serial-number blocks within the same horsepower rating, so the serial number and the original part number take priority over horsepower alone.
  • This is an aftermarket replacement and is not a genuine Mercury Marine OEM component.
  • Handle the sensor tip carefully. Dropping the sensor or forcing it into a dirty bore can damage the sealing surface and cause intermittent signal faults.
  • Professional installation is recommended for camshaft position sensors on EFI and Verado powerheads.

Why Choose JLM MARINE?

  • Precision Fit: Cross-referenced to Mercury 880609 (and superseded 8M0011987 / 8M0233140) for the EFI FourStroke, Verado, and QC4V applications listed above.
  • Quality Control: Each batch is inspected for dimensional consistency and workmanship.
  • Direct from Manufacturer: Aftermarket marine camshaft position sensors engineered for reliable timing feedback on Mercury powerheads.
