Installation Guide
- Safely support the section of the boat trailer you are working on.
- Remove the old pal nuts from the ends of the existing shaft using pliers or a chisel.
- Slide the old, worn shaft out of the roller and mounting bracket.
- Clean the roller and the bracket to ensure a smooth fit for the new components.
- Align the boat roller in the bracket and slide the new shaft through both bracket holes and the roller.
- Place a new pal nut on one end of the shaft. Tap it into place with a hammer until it is secure.
- Repeat the process for the pal nut on the other end of the shaft.
- Check that the roller spins freely on the newly installed shaft.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I choose the correct shaft size for my trailer?
To ensure a proper fit, measure the required length and diameter. The length is determined by the width of your roller plus the width of the mounting brackets. The diameter must match the inner diameter of your roller. Always measure your old part before ordering.
What's the difference between Stainless Steel and Zinc Plated shafts?
304 Stainless steel offers the best corrosion resistance and is recommended for saltwater and brackish water environments. Zinc plated steel provides good protection for freshwater applications and is a cost-effective choice.
When should I replace my roller shaft?
Inspect your roller shafts regularly for signs of significant rust, bending, or wear, especially at the ends near the pal nuts. Replace any shaft that appears compromised to prevent failure and protect your boat's hull during transport.
