Installation Guide
- Safely position the outboard or stern drive for lower unit access and drain the gearcase oil completely.
- Remove the propeller, followed by the bearing carrier assembly, to access the old seals.
- Carefully pry out the old oil seal from its housing, taking care not to scratch the housing surface. Note the seal's orientation.
- Thoroughly clean the seal seating area in the housing to remove any old sealant, corrosion, or debris.
- Lightly lubricate the new seal's outer diameter and inner lip with marine-grade grease.
- Using a correctly sized seal driver or socket, press the new seal into the housing until it is fully and evenly seated.
- Reinstall the bearing carrier, propeller, and any other hardware in reverse order of removal.
- Refill the gearcase with fresh, manufacturer-recommended lubricant to the correct level. Check for leaks around the seal before operation.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this seal fits my engine?
The most reliable method is to compare the part number of your old seal to the numbers in our Part Number Cross-Reference table. Additionally, check the Compatible Engine Models tables for your model and serial number range. For a final physical check, measure your old seal's outer diameter, inner diameter, and width and compare them to the dimensions listed in our Technical Specifications.
What are the signs that my oil seal needs replacement?
Common symptoms of a failed prop shaft seal include visible gear oil leaking from the propeller area, water contamination in the gear lube (which makes it appear milky-white or creamy), or a noticeable burning oil smell after operation. Finding fishing line wrapped around the prop shaft is a frequent cause of seal failure.
How often should I replace this oil seal?
It is recommended to inspect oil seals during every routine lower unit service (e.g., water pump replacement) or at least once per season. To ensure reliability, it's best practice to replace the seals whenever the gearcase is disassembled for any repair.
