This JLM Marine stainless steel skeg guard (SKU JLM1907) repairs or protects the skeg on MerCruiser Alpha One (Gen I) sterndrives, model years 1985–1990, and is sold as an aftermarket alternative to reference numbers JLM27021 (Megaware SkegGuard) and 35-SS605 (Panther Safe-Skeg). Fitment Warning

The model years 1985–1990 refer to the Alpha One first-generation (Gen I) drive only. Do not order by brand name alone: MerCruiser used several drives with different skeg shapes, and this guard does not fit the earlier MerCruiser 1/R (“Pre-Alpha”) drives or the Alpha One Generation II introduced in 1991. Identify your exact drive generation and year before ordering.

Always confirm your exact drive model, gearcase, and skeg outline against the product photos before purchase. 27021 and 35-SS605 are aftermarket reference numbers, not Mercury Marine OEM part numbers.

Known Exclusions

A quick visual check: Alpha One Gen I drives have two studs with nuts under the ventilation plate just above the propeller; Alpha One Gen II drives do not. If your boat is a 1990–1991 model year, verify the drive generation by serial number rather than by year alone.

Before Ordering

Confirm the following on your boat: the drive is an Alpha One Gen I from 1985–1990; at least 2 to 3 inches of the upper skeg remain intact to anchor the guard; and the outline of your skeg matches the guard shape shown in the product photos. If your skeg is broken off higher than that, this bolt-on guard cannot be secured and a weld-on repair may be required instead.

Installation

Installation is a straightforward bolt-on job for most owners with basic tools. The boat must be out of the water, and you will need an electric drill with a 1/4″ bit.

1. Check that at least 2 to 3 inches of the upper skeg remain to hold the guard securely.
2. Clean the existing skeg surface so it is free of paint flakes, marine growth, and debris.
3. Slide the guard over the skeg and seat it fully, tapping gently with a rubber mallet if needed.
4. Using the two pre-drilled holes in the guard as pilots, drill through the skeg with a 1/4″ drill bit.
5. Insert the supplied bolts (pre-coated with thread locker) through the guard and skeg into the barrel nuts.
6. Tighten evenly with the supplied Allen wrenches until the guard sits firmly without gaps.

If the skeg is severely deformed or the guard cannot seat flush, stop and consult a marine technician instead of forcing the fit.

FAQ

Will this fit my MerCruiser drive?
It fits Alpha One first-generation drives from 1985–1990 only. Check your drive generation and serial number, then compare your skeg outline with the product photos. For Gen II (1991+) use reference 27031; for 1973–1984 Pre-Alpha drives use reference 27011.

Can I install it on an already broken skeg?
Yes. The guard is designed to cover a damaged or partially missing skeg, as long as at least 2 to 3 inches of the upper skeg remain to anchor the mounting hardware.

What is the drain hole for?
The drain hole lets water escape from between the guard and the skeg. This prevents trapped water from causing hidden corrosion or freeze damage in cold climates.

Is this an original Mercury Marine part?
No. This is an aftermarket accessory made by JLM Marine. The numbers 27021 and 35-SS605 are cross-reference numbers of comparable aftermarket skeg guards, not Mercury OEM part numbers.
