Installation Guide
- Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the engine's top cowling.
- Place the outboard in neutral and remove the bolts connecting the lower unit (gearcase) to the upper driveshaft housing.
- Gently separate the lower unit from the rest of the engine to expose the water pump.
- Unscrew the bolts on the water pump housing and lift it off. Note the orientation of the old impeller vanes.
- Remove the old impeller from the driveshaft. You may need to remove a small Woodruff key.
- Clean any debris or corrosion from the pump housing, wear plate, and driveshaft.
- Lightly lubricate the new impeller and the inside of the pump housing with marine grease.
- Install the Woodruff key, then slide the new impeller onto the driveshaft, turning it in the direction of engine rotation to seat the vanes correctly.
- Reinstall the water pump housing and tighten the bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque.
- Carefully guide the lower unit back into position, ensuring the driveshaft and water tube align correctly.
- Secure the lower unit with its mounting bolts.
- Reconnect the battery and test the engine in a suitable water supply to ensure a strong, steady stream from the tell-tale outlet.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
Q: How do I confirm this impeller fits my 2HP Yamaha?
A: This impeller is specifically designed for Yamaha 2HP 2-stroke outboards made between 1989 and 2002. To ensure a perfect match, please compare your engine model (e.g., 2MSHY, 2SD) against our detailed compatibility list and verify that your existing part number is 646-44352-01-00.
Q: What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?
A: Common indicators of a worn or damaged impeller include the engine overheating, a weak or intermittent water stream from the "tell-tale" cooling outlet, or, upon inspection, discovering cracked, brittle, or missing blades on the old impeller.
Q: How often should I replace my outboard's impeller?
A: As a key part of preventative maintenance, we recommend inspecting and replacing the water pump impeller every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of operation, whichever comes first. This interval can vary based on usage and water conditions (e.g., saltwater vs. freshwater).
Q: OEM vs. Aftermarket?
A: This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials. Production is done in an ISO9002-certified facility, and each batch is inspected for consistent performance.
Q: How fast do you ship and how much does it cost?
A: We offer fast global shipping—typically 5–15 days worldwide—and standard shipping is free. Expedited options are available at checkout depending on your location.
Q: What is your warranty and return policy?
A: This product includes a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use. If something goes wrong, contact our support team with your order details. Returns are accepted within our standard return window (unused & in original condition); please see our policy page or reach out for instructions.
