Installation Guide
- Disconnect the negative battery cable to ensure safety.
- Place a drain pan under the lower unit and remove the gear lube drain screw to drain the oil.
- Remove the bolts securing the lower unit (gearcase) to the engine's upper casing.
- Carefully lower and remove the gearcase assembly from the drive shaft housing.
- Unbolt and lift the water pump housing to expose the old impeller. Note the rotational direction of the old impeller fins.
- Slide the old impeller off the drive shaft. Remove the old gaskets and wear plate below it.
- Thoroughly clean the mounting surfaces of any old gasket material or debris.
- Install the new wear plate and gaskets. Slide the new impeller onto the shaft, rotating it in the direction of engine operation to correctly orient the fins.
- Re-install the water pump housing and tighten the bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque.
- Carefully guide the lower unit back into position, ensuring the drive shaft, shift shaft, and water tube align correctly. Secure it with the bolts.
- Refill the lower unit with the correct type and amount of marine gear lube.
- Once fully assembled, use a flush attachment to supply water to the engine and test run it, checking for a strong, steady stream from the tell-tale outlet.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this impeller fits my specific engine model?
Check your engine's model, year, and horsepower against our "Compatible Engine Models" tables. For definitive confirmation, compare the part number (6E5-44352-01-00) to the one listed in your engine's service manual or inscribed on the old part itself.
How often should I replace the water pump impeller?
As a critical maintenance item, the impeller should be replaced every 100 operating hours or annually, whichever comes first. This preventative measure helps avoid engine overheating and costly damage.
What are the signs of a failing impeller?
Common symptoms include a weak or intermittent water stream from the engine's tell-tale port, an engine overheating alarm sounding, or a noticeable drop in water pressure on your vessel's gauges. If you see any of these signs, inspect the impeller immediately.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials. Production is done in an ISO9002-certified facility, and each batch is inspected for consistent performance.
