Installation Guide
-
Safety First: Disconnect the battery cables from the battery before beginning any work.
-
Access the Lower Unit: Remove the engine's upper cowling. Shift the outboard into neutral to facilitate removal of the lower unit (gearcase).
-
Remove Lower Unit: Loosen and remove the bolts securing the lower unit to the engine's midsection. Carefully lower and separate the gearcase.
-
Disassemble Water Pump: Locate the water pump assembly on top of the gearcase. Remove the four bolts to lift off the pump housing.
-
Inspect and Remove Old Parts: Take note of the old parts' orientation. Remove the old impeller, wear plate, gaskets, and pump cup. Clean all mating surfaces thoroughly.
-
Install New Components: Place the new Woodruff key onto the driveshaft flat spot. Install the new wear plate and gasket. Slide the new impeller onto the shaft, turning it clockwise to align the vanes correctly.
-
Reassemble Pump: Install the new pump cup over the impeller. Place the new gasket and o-rings on the housing. Reinstall the housing and tighten the bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque.
-
Reinstall Lower Unit: Carefully guide the lower unit back into place, ensuring the driveshaft and water tube align correctly. Secure it with the mounting bolts.
-
Final Checks: Reconnect the battery. Start the engine using a water supply (flushing muffs) and confirm a steady stream of water is exiting the tell-tale outlet.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this kit fits my specific Yamaha engine?
Check the "Compatible Engine Models" tables on this page to find your engine's model, HP, and year range. You can also cross-reference your existing part number with the numbers in the "Part Number Cross-Reference" section. For further confirmation, use the Yamaha Parts Catalog link provided above.
What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?
Common signs include the engine overheating at idle or low speeds, a weak or intermittent water stream from the "tell-tale" cooling outlet, and finding brittle, cracked, or melted pieces of the old impeller upon inspection.
How often should the water pump impeller be replaced?
For optimal engine protection, it is recommended to inspect the impeller annually and replace it every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of use, whichever comes first. This interval should be shorter if operating primarily in saltwater or sandy/silty conditions.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials. Production is done in an ISO9002-certified facility, and each batch is inspected for consistent performance.
How fast do you ship and how much does it cost?
We offer fast global shipping—typically 5–15 days worldwide—and standard shipping is free. Expedited options are available at checkout depending on your location.
What is your warranty and return policy?
This product includes a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use. If something goes wrong, contact our support team with your order details. Returns are accepted within our standard return window (unused & in original condition); please see our policy page or reach out for instructions.
