Installation Guide
- Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the engine's top cowl.
- Shift the outboard into neutral. Remove the bolts securing the lower unit (gearcase) to the upper driveshaft housing.
- Carefully separate and lower the gearcase from the engine.
- Locate and unbolt the water pump housing cover to expose the impeller.
- Take note of the impeller vane direction before removing the old impeller, key, plate, and gaskets.
- Thoroughly clean all mating surfaces, removing any old gasket residue.
- Install the new wear plate and gasket from the kit onto the gearcase.
- Insert the new Woodruff key into the driveshaft and slide the new impeller on, rotating it clockwise to bed the vanes correctly.
- Apply a light coat of marine grease to the inside of the new housing and install it over the impeller.
- Securely reinstall the housing bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque.
- Re-attach the gearcase, ensuring the driveshaft, shift shaft, and water tube are correctly aligned.
- Once fully assembled, start the engine in a water supply and confirm a steady stream of water from the tell-tale port.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this kit fits my Suzuki engine?
Verify your engine model and year falls within the 1988–1997 range for the DT8C or DT9.9C models listed in the "Compatible Engine Models" table. You can also cross-reference your existing part number with those in our list to ensure a match.
What are the signs that my water pump impeller needs replacement?
Common signs include the engine overheating, a weak or non-existent water stream from the "telltale" indicator port, or finding cracked, brittle, or worn-down vanes during a visual inspection.
How often should I replace my water pump impeller?
For preventative maintenance, it is recommended to replace the impeller every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of use, depending on operating conditions (e.g., saltwater vs. freshwater). Always consult your owner's manual for specific service intervals.
