Installation Guide
Follow these general steps to replace your water pump impeller. It is always recommended to consult your engine's service manual for detailed instructions specific to your model.
-
Disconnect Power: Disconnect the battery before beginning any work.
-
Access Lower Unit: Remove the bolts that secure the gearcase (lower unit) to the outboard's leg.
-
Separate Lower Unit: Carefully lower the gearcase away from the engine. You may need to disconnect a shift shaft linkage.
-
Open Water Pump Housing: Unscrew the bolts on top of the water pump housing and lift it off to expose the impeller.
-
Remove Old Impeller: Take note of the original orientation of the impeller vanes. Remove the old impeller and the woodruff key from the driveshaft.
-
Clean and Inspect: Clean the inside of the housing and the wear plate. Inspect them for scoring, cracks, or heat damage. Replace if necessary.
-
Install New Impeller: Insert the woodruff key into the shaft. Slide the new impeller onto the shaft while turning the driveshaft clockwise to bend the vanes into the correct position within the housing.
-
Reassemble Housing: Place the housing back over the impeller and tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
-
Reattach Lower Unit: Guide the lower unit back into position, ensuring the driveshaft, water tube, and shift shaft align correctly.
-
Secure and Test: Reinstall and tighten the gearcase bolts. Reconnect the battery, supply water to the engine using flushing muffs, and start it to check for a strong, steady stream from the tell-tale outlet.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
Q: How do I confirm this impeller fits my engine?
A: Start by checking the tables above for your engine's brand, model, horsepower, and year range. For Mercury/Mariner owners, we highly recommend using the linked serial number guide to verify your exact model, as specifications can vary even within the same year.
Q: What are the common signs of a failing water pump impeller?
A: The most common indicators include a weak or non-existent water stream from the engine's "tell-tale" outlet, an engine temperature alarm, or the engine overheating, especially at idle or low speeds. Upon inspection, a bad impeller may have cracked, brittle, or missing vanes.
Q: How often should I replace my engine's impeller?
A: As a preventative maintenance measure, we recommend inspecting your impeller annually and replacing it every 1-2 seasons (or every 100-200 hours of use), whichever comes first. This interval can be shorter if you operate in sandy, silty, or saltwater conditions.
Q: OEM vs. Aftermarket?
A: This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials. Production is done in an ISO9002-certified facility, and each batch is inspected for consistent performance.
Q: How fast do you ship and how much does it cost?
A: We offer fast global shipping—typically 5–15 days worldwide—and standard shipping is free. Expedited options are available at checkout depending on your location.
Q: What is your warranty and return policy?
A: This product includes a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use. If something goes wrong, contact our support team with your order details. Returns are accepted within our standard return window (unused & in original condition); please see our policy page or reach out for instructions.
