Installation Guide
-
Safety First: Before starting, disconnect the engine's battery cables to prevent accidental starting.
-
Access the Lower Unit: Place the outboard motor in a secure, upright position. Remove the bolts that attach the lower unit (gearcase) to the upper leg of the motor.
-
Remove the Water Pump Housing: With the lower unit separated, locate the water pump assembly. Unscrew the bolts securing the water pump housing cover and lift the cover off.
-
Inspect and Remove Old Impeller: Note the orientation of the blades on the old impeller before removing it. Pull the old impeller off the driveshaft. Remove the old key from the driveshaft.
-
Clean and Inspect: Thoroughly clean the inside of the pump housing and the base plate. Inspect the housing and cover for any cracks, melting, or scoring. Replace if damaged.
-
Install New Impeller: Insert the new key into the keyway on the driveshaft. Slide the new impeller onto the shaft, aligning its keyway with the key.
-
Seat the Blades: Apply a light coat of marine grease or a soap-and-water solution to the inside of the pump housing. Place the housing over the impeller and press down while turning the driveshaft clockwise to correctly bend the blades into position.
-
Reassemble and Tighten: Secure the water pump housing with its bolts, tightening them to the manufacturer's specified torque.
-
Reinstall Lower Unit: Guide the lower unit back into place, ensuring the driveshaft, shift shaft, and water tube are properly aligned. Re-install and tighten the mounting bolts.
-
Test Operation: Reconnect the battery. Start the engine using a water supply (flushing muffs or in a test tank) and check for a steady stream of water from the cooling system's tell-tale port.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
Q: How do I confirm this impeller fits my Suzuki engine?
A: Check your engine model and year against the compatibility table. This impeller fits Suzuki 2-Stroke DT9.9 (1977–1997), DT15 (1983–1997), and 4-Stroke DF8/DF9.9/DF15 (2004+). Also, verify your part number matches one of the cross-references, such as 17461-93903.
Q: What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?
A: Common signs include the engine overheating, a weak or non-existent water stream from the tell-tale port, or a cracked, brittle, or stiff appearance on the impeller blades during inspection.
Q: How often should this impeller be replaced?
A: For optimal performance and to prevent overheating, it's recommended to inspect the impeller annually and replace it every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of use, depending on operating conditions (e.g., saltwater vs. freshwater).
Q: OEM vs. Aftermarket?
A: This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials. Production is done in an ISO9002-certified facility, and each batch is inspected for consistent performance.
