Installation Guide
-
Safety First: Ensure the engine is off and disconnect the battery cables. Shift the outboard into the neutral position.
-
Drain Gearcase Oil: Place a drain pan under the lower unit and remove the upper and lower gearcase oil drain screws to drain the oil completely.
-
Remove Lower Unit: Loosen and remove the bolts securing the lower unit (gearcase) to the outboard's upper housing.
-
Separate Assembly: Carefully slide the lower unit down and away from the upper housing to expose the driveshaft and water pump assembly.
-
Access Impeller: Remove the bolts on the water pump housing cover to access the impeller.
-
Remove Old Impeller: Note the orientation of the old impeller blades. Remove the old impeller and the drive key from the shaft.
-
Install New Impeller: Clean the inside of the pump housing. Insert the new key into the driveshaft slot and slide the new impeller on, rotating the driveshaft clockwise to bend the blades in the correct direction.
-
Reassemble: Reinstall the water pump housing and tighten the bolts. Apply a light waterproof grease to the driveshaft splines.
-
Reattach Lower Unit: Carefully guide the lower unit back into place, ensuring the driveshaft, shift shaft, and water tube align correctly. Securely tighten all bolts.
-
Refill Oil: Refill the gearcase with the manufacturer-recommended marine gear lubricant before reinstalling the drain screws with new gaskets.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this fits my engine?
This impeller is specifically for Suzuki 8 HP DT8 and 9.9 HP DT9.9 2-stroke outboards from 1988–1997. Please check your engine model and year against our compatibility table. It is a direct substitute for Suzuki part numbers 17461-92D02, 17461-92D01, 17461-92D00, and Sierra 18-3000.
What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?
The most common signs are the engine running hotter than normal or a weak, inconsistent water stream from the "telltale" indicator outlet. During inspection, you may find the old impeller has brittle, cracked, or broken blades.
How often should I replace the impeller?
For optimal performance and to prevent overheating, we recommend replacing the impeller every 1-2 years as part of regular preventative maintenance. Replacement frequency may depend on hours of use and water conditions (e.g., saltwater or sandy environments).

This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials. Production is done in an ISO9002-certified facility, and each batch is inspected for consistent performance.
