Installation Guide
- Disconnect the spark plug wire(s) and remove the lower unit from the outboard motor.
- Locate and unbolt the water pump housing to access the impeller.
-
Important: Take note of your housing type. This impeller works with both the plastic housing that uses a separate metal cup and the solid brass housing that does not.
- Remove the old impeller, paying close attention to the original orientation of the vanes.
- Clean any debris from the housing interior and the wear plate.
- Install the new impeller, rotating the driveshaft clockwise to help seat the vanes in the correct direction.
- Reassemble the pump housing, applying sealant to bolts if required, and torque to manufacturer specifications.
- Reattach the lower unit, connect a water supply, and test the engine to confirm a strong water stream from the tell-tale outlet.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I know if this impeller fits my Suzuki engine?
Please refer to the "Compatible Engine Models" table above. This part is specifically designed for DF4/5/6 and DT4/5/6/8 models within the stated year ranges. Always verify your engine model and year before ordering.
My water pump housing looks different. Will this impeller still work?
Yes. This impeller is compatible with two common Suzuki housing types: the plastic housing which requires a metal insert (cup), and older-style brass housings that do not use a cup. It is designed to function correctly in both versions.
How often should I replace my water pump impeller?
As a key part of preventative maintenance, we recommend inspecting your impeller annually and replacing it every 1-2 years or 100-200 hours of use. Service intervals should be shorter if operating primarily in saltwater or silty/sandy conditions.
What are the signs of a failing impeller?
Symptoms of a worn or damaged impeller include the engine overheating at idle or low speeds, a weak or non-existent water stream from the "telltale" outlet, or finding cracked, brittle, or broken vanes on the old impeller during an inspection.
