Installation Guide
- Disconnect the negative battery cable and ensure the engine is off.
- Place the outboard motor in the tilted position and remove the lower unit mounting bolts.
- Carefully separate the lower unit (gearcase) from the upper engine housing.
- Locate the water pump housing on top of the gearcase and remove its mounting bolts.
- Slide the housing up and off the driveshaft to expose the impeller. Note the rotational direction of the old impeller's fins.
- Remove the old impeller, key, and gaskets.
- Clean the interior surfaces of the pump housing and wear plate, inspecting for scoring or damage.
- Install the new key and slide the new impeller onto the driveshaft, rotating it in the correct direction (typically clockwise) to seat the fins.
- Reassemble the water pump housing with new gaskets and torque bolts to the manufacturer's specified values.
- Reattach the lower unit to the engine, ensuring the driveshaft and water tube align correctly.
- Secure the lower unit bolts, reconnect the battery, and test the engine using a water supply to confirm proper water flow from the tell-tale port.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this impeller fits my Suzuki engine?
Verify your Suzuki model and year against the compatibility chart above. This impeller is specifically for non-A models of the DF200, DF225, DF250, and DF300, and it directly replaces OEM part numbers 17461-93J00 and 17461-93J01. Cross-checking the part number is the most reliable way to ensure a match.
What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?
Common signs include the engine overheating at idle or low speeds, a weak or intermittent water stream from the tell-tale indicator port, or finding brittle, cracked, or broken vanes on the old impeller during inspection.
How often should I replace my water pump impeller?
For optimal engine cooling and protection, we recommend inspecting the impeller annually and replacing it every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of operation. Replacement frequency may vary based on usage and water conditions (saltwater, sandy, or debris-filled water may require more frequent changes).
