Installation Guide
- Disconnect the negative battery cable for safety.
- Place a drain pan under the lower unit and remove the gearcase drain and vent plugs to drain the gear oil.
- Remove the bolts securing the lower unit (gearcase) to the engine's midsection.
- Carefully lower the gearcase away from the engine. The driveshaft will disengage from the powerhead.
- Locate the water pump housing on top of the gearcase and remove its bolts.
- Lift the housing off to expose the impeller. Note the rotational direction of the existing impeller's fins for reference.
- Remove the old impeller and the drive key from the shaft. Clean any debris or corrosion from the housing interior and wear plate.
- Install the new drive key into the driveshaft slot.
- Slide the new impeller onto the driveshaft, aligning its keyway with the key.
- While rotating the driveshaft clockwise, press the water pump housing down over the impeller. This correctly bends the fins.
- Secure the housing with its bolts and torque to the manufacturer's specification. Reinstall the gearcase and refill with new gear oil before testing.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this fits my engine?
This impeller is confirmed to fit Suzuki DF200, DF225, and DF250 models from 2004 to current, as well as DF300 models from 2007 to current. For DF350 outboards, compatibility is for select models only; it is critical to verify your specific engine's part number requirements. The surest method is to cross-reference the part numbers 17461-93J00 or 17461-93J01 with your engine's service manual or existing part.
What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?
A weak or nonexistent stream of water from the engine's tell-tale port is the most common symptom. Other signs include engine overheating alarms, steam from the exhaust, or a noticeable drop in performance as the engine's ECU reduces power to prevent damage.
How often should I replace the impeller?
For preventative maintenance, it is recommended to inspect the impeller annually and replace it every 1 to 2 years (or every 100-200 hours of operation). More frequent replacement may be necessary if you operate in sandy, silty, or saltwater environments, which can accelerate wear.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials. Production is done in an ISO9002-certified facility, and each batch is inspected for consistent performance.
