Installation Guide
-
Safety First: Ensure the engine is off and cool, and disconnect the battery. Close the raw water intake seacock to prevent water from entering the boat.
-
Access the Pump: Locate the raw water pump on your engine. You may need to remove a cover or other components to access it.
-
Remove the Old Impeller: Unscrew the pump cover plate. Use impeller pullers or two screwdrivers to carefully pry the old impeller out of the housing.
-
Clean and Inspect: Clean any debris or old gasket material from the pump housing and cover plate. Inspect the housing for scoring or damage.
-
Prepare the New Impeller: Apply a light coat of the included impeller lubricant to the inside of the pump housing and onto the new impeller.
-
Install the New Impeller: Insert the new impeller into the housing. Important: Bend the blades in the correct direction of the pump's rotation. The direction is often indicated by an arrow on the pump body.
-
Reassemble: Place the new O-ring or gasket on the pump cover, then reinstall the cover and tighten the screws in a star pattern to ensure an even seal.
-
Final Checks: Reconnect the battery and open the seacock. Start the engine and immediately check for water leaks at the pump cover. Confirm that water is flowing out of the exhaust.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this fits my Volvo Penta engine?
This impeller is designed for Volvo Penta GM V6 and V8 gasoline engines (3.0L, 4.3L, 5.0L, 5.7L, 5.8L) manufactured up to 1998. The most reliable method is to match your existing part number to one of the numbers listed in our Part Number Cross-Reference table, such as Volvo Penta 21951346 or Jabsco 1210-0001.
What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?
Common signs include the engine running hotter than normal, a reduced flow of water from the exhaust outlet, or visible cracks and stiffness in the impeller blades upon inspection. Overheating at idle is a classic symptom of a worn impeller.
How often should I replace the impeller?
For preventative maintenance, it is recommended to inspect your impeller annually and replace it every 1-2 years, depending on usage (hours run) and water conditions (sandy or silty water can accelerate wear). Never leave an old, hardened impeller in the pump during winterization.
What is the difference between this impeller and an OEM part?
This is an aftermarket part designed to meet or exceed OEM specifications for fit, material, and performance. It provides a reliable and cost-effective alternative to the original manufacturer's component. We use high-quality neoprene and brass inserts, similar to the original parts.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials. Production is done in an ISO9002-certified facility, and each batch is inspected for consistent performance.
How fast do you ship and how much does it cost?
We offer fast global shipping—typically 5–15 days worldwide—and standard shipping is free. Expedited options are available at checkout depending on your location.
What is your warranty and return policy?
This product includes a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use. If something goes wrong, contact our support team with your order details. Returns are accepted within our standard return window (unused & in original condition); please see our policy page or reach out for instructions.
Important Notes
- Verify that the product images and specifications match your original part. If discrepancies exist—even if your model is listed—do not proceed with the purchase.
- This product is an aftermarket replacement part and is not an OEM component.
- Professional installation is recommended to ensure safety and optimal performance.
