Installation Guide
-
Safety First: Disconnect the boat's battery. Place an absorbent pad under the power steering pump to catch any fluid drips.
-
Remove Belt: Loosen the tensioner and carefully remove the serpentine belt from the pump's pulley.
-
Disconnect Lines: Using a line wrench, disconnect the high-pressure and low-pressure (return) hoses from the back of the pump. Be prepared for fluid to drain.
-
Remove Old Pump: Unfasten the mounting bolts holding the pump to the engine bracket and carefully remove the pump.
-
Transfer Pulley: If your new pump does not include a pulley, use a dedicated power steering pump pulley remover/installer tool to transfer the pulley from the old pump to the new one.
-
Mount New Pump: Position the new pump on the engine bracket and tighten the mounting bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque.
-
Reconnect Lines & Belt: Securely attach the high-pressure and return hoses. Reinstall the serpentine belt, ensuring it is properly routed and tensioned.
-
Fill & Bleed: Fill the reservoir with the manufacturer-recommended power steering fluid. Bleed the system by turning the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times with the engine running until the operation is smooth and quiet.
-
Final Check: Top off the fluid as needed, reconnect the battery, and inspect all connections for leaks with the engine running.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this fits my engine?
To ensure compatibility, check the 'Part Number Cross-Reference' table to see if your old part number is listed. Also, compare your engine's model and displacement (e.g., 5.7L) against our 'Compatible Engine Models' list for Volvo Penta and OMC. This pump directly replaces OEM parts 3888323, 3850491, and 3850492.
What are the signs that my power steering pump is failing?
Common symptoms include a whining or groaning noise that increases with engine RPM, stiff or heavy steering (especially at low speeds), and visible power steering fluid leaks around the pump or its connections.
Can I use my old pulley on this pump?
Yes, this pump is designed to work with the OEM pulley. You will need a power steering pulley puller/installer tool to safely remove the pulley from your old pump and install it onto the new one without causing damage.
