Skeg Guard for Select 40-140HP Outboards, Replaces 27071 / 35-SS625

This JLM Marine skeg guard (JLM1906) is an aftermarket 316 stainless steel guard that slips over a compatible outboard skeg to protect it, or to cover and reinforce a damaged one. It is built around replacement reference numbers 27071 and 35-SS625, whose published fitment lists are similar but not identical, so always check the table for the reference you are replacing.

Fitment warning: "40–140HP" is only the combined horsepower span across every application listed below; it does not mean every 40–140HP outboard fits. Engines with the same brand and horsepower can use different cylinder counts, strokes, and gearcases. Match the replacement reference number, brand, horsepower, stroke, year, cylinder count, and gearcase type before ordering.

Compatible Engine Models

The two reference numbers this guard replaces are published by different sources and their fitment lists differ in several rows. Use only the table for the reference number you are replacing; do not combine entries across the two tables.

*About "Present": In the 27071 table, "Present" is wording retained from the September 2023 reference guide and does not by itself verify every later model year. In the 35-SS625 table, it is wording from the currently published guide. Always confirm your exact model, gearcase, and skeg shape against the product photos before purchase.

Known Exclusions and Easy-to-Miss Differences

  • Honda 90 HP 3-cylinder: not covered by 27071; the reference guide assigns 27171.
  • Honda 115 HP, 2011 and newer: not covered by 27071; the reference guide assigns 27271.
  • Mercury / Mariner 75 / 90 / 115 HP 4-stroke Command Thrust or SeaPro, 2014 and newer: not covered by 27071; the reference guide assigns 27211.
  • Suzuki outboards: no Suzuki model is listed under 27071. Suzuki 40–70 HP 4-stroke applications belong to reference 27171.
  • Yamaha 60–100 HP, 2002 and newer: outside the 35-SS625 Yamaha row (1998–2001). The reference guide assigns most of these later Yamaha models to 27321 or 27291.
  • Nissan / Tohatsu 75 / 90 HP BFT 4-stroke, 2014–2019: listed only under 27071; the 35-SS625 guide does not include this row.

Before ordering: Identify which reference number (27071 or 35-SS625) matches your engine, then confirm the engine make, horsepower, stroke, cylinder count, model year, and gearcase type from your engine serial-number plate. Compare the product photos with your lower unit's skeg shape. If anything differs, do not order; contact JLM Marine with your engine details and serial number for a fitment check.

General Installation Guide

This is a bolt-on installation using the two pre-drilled holes in the guard. If you are not comfortable drilling the skeg or confirming the fit, have a qualified marine technician install the guard.

  1. Confirm the fit before drilling. For a damaged skeg, enough of the upper skeg must remain to hold the guard securely; reference-part makers recommend at least 2–3 inches.
  2. Clean the skeg and file down any burrs or jagged edges so the guard can slide on.
  3. Slide the guard over the skeg and gently seat it with a rubber, leather, or wooden mallet. Verify alignment with the gearcase before drilling.
  4. Using the two pre-drilled holes in the guard as guides, drill through the skeg with the supplied drill bit. Wear gloves and eye protection; sheet-metal edges can be sharp.
  5. Insert the supplied fasteners (the thread-locking coating helps prevent loosening) and tighten them evenly with the supplied Allen wrenches.
  6. Recheck seating, alignment, and bolt tightness before operating the motor, and again after the first outing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this an OEM part?
No. This is a JLM Marine aftermarket part sold as a replacement for the reference numbers 27071 and 35-SS625. It is not manufactured or endorsed by the engine brands listed in the fitment tables.

Can it be installed over a broken skeg?
Yes, provided the shape matches your gearcase and enough upper skeg remains for the two mounting bolts to anchor securely (reference-part makers recommend at least 2–3 inches).

My engine's horsepower is within 40–140HP. Does that mean it fits?
Not necessarily. The fitment is defined per brand, stroke, cylinder count, year, and gearcase, not by horsepower alone. Check the exact row in the table for your reference number.

Why does the guard have a drain slot?
The slot lets water trapped between the guard and the skeg escape, reducing stagnant water that can promote corrosion or freeze damage in cold storage.

Will it protect against hitting rocks at speed?
A skeg guard is designed to reduce wear and minor impact damage and to cover an already damaged skeg. It is not designed to prevent damage from a hard collision with a fixed object.

Important Notes

  • Verify the replacement reference number and the physical skeg shape against the product photos before drilling or installing; do not install if the contour or hole positions do not match.
  • Installation requires drilling two holes through your skeg, which is permanent. Confirm fitment first.
  • This product is an aftermarket replacement. All brand and engine names in the fitment tables are used only to describe compatibility and remain trademarks of their respective owners.
