Installation Guide
- Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the engine cover.
- Place the outboard in neutral and remove the bolts connecting the lower unit (gearcase) to the engine's leg.
- Carefully lower the gearcase to expose the water pump assembly.
- Remove the bolts securing the water pump housing cover to access the impeller.
- Note the rotational direction of the old impeller's blades before sliding it off the drive shaft.
- Thoroughly clean the impeller housing and wear plate, removing any old gasket material or debris.
- Lightly coat the new impeller and the inside of the housing with marine grease.
- Slide the new impeller onto the drive shaft, turning the shaft clockwise to correctly seat the impeller blades inside the housing cup.
- Reinstall the water pump housing cover, ensuring any seals or gaskets are properly aligned. Torque bolts to manufacturer specifications.
- Raise the lower unit back into position, carefully aligning the drive shaft, shift shaft, and water tube. Secure with bolts.
- Reconnect the battery. Test the engine using a water supply (flushing muffs or in the water) and confirm a strong, steady stream from the tell-tale port.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
Q: How do I confirm this impeller fits my engine?
A: This impeller is for Johnson/Evinrude 40-60 HP 2-stroke outboards from 1978-1986. Please check the "Compatible Engine Models" and "Part Number Cross-Reference" tables on this page. It is crucial to verify it replaces your existing part numbers (389589, 777129, or 777827) and is for a small housing pump.
Q: What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?
A: Common signs include a weak or non-existent water stream from the "tell-tale" outlet, engine overheating alarms, or a noticeable drop in engine performance. A worn or damaged impeller cannot pump cooling water effectively.
Q: How often should I replace the impeller?
A: As a preventative maintenance item, it is recommended to inspect the impeller annually and replace it every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of use, depending on operating conditions (e.g., saltwater vs. freshwater).
Q: OEM vs. Aftermarket?
A: This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials. Production is done in an ISO9002-certified facility, and each batch is inspected for consistent performance.
Q: How fast do you ship and how much does it cost?
A: We offer fast global shipping—typically 5–15 days worldwide—and standard shipping is free. Expedited options are available at checkout depending on your location.
Q: What is your warranty and return policy?
A: This product includes a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use. If something goes wrong, contact our support team with your order details. Returns are accepted within our standard return window (unused & in original condition); please see our policy page or reach out for instructions.
