Installation Guide
- Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the engine cover.
- Place a drain pan under the lower unit and remove the gearcase drain screw to empty the gear oil.
- Remove the bolts securing the lower unit (gearcase) to the upper engine housing.
- Carefully separate the lower unit from the engine to access the water pump assembly.
- Remove the water pump housing bolts and lift the housing to expose the old impeller.
- Note the rotational direction of the existing impeller blades before removing it from the driveshaft.
- Clean the housing interior and wear plate, inspecting them for scoring, warping, or damage.
- Slide the new impeller onto the driveshaft, turning the shaft clockwise to help seat the blades correctly.
- Apply a thin layer of marine grease or soap-water solution to the inside of the housing and reinstall it.
- Reassemble the lower unit to the engine, ensuring the driveshaft, shift shaft, and water tube align correctly.
- Re-fill the gearcase with the specified lubricant before starting the engine.
- Use a water muff to supply cooling water, start the engine, and confirm a steady stream from the tell-tale port.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this impeller fits my engine?
Check your engine's model, horsepower, and year range against the compatible models table. The most reliable method is to cross-reference your existing part number with those in the "Part Number Cross-Reference" list to ensure a perfect match.
What are common signs of a failing water pump impeller?
Key indicators include the engine overheating, an alarm sounding, or a weak or nonexistent water stream from the tell-tale outlet. During a visual inspection, a worn impeller may have cracked, brittle, or deformed blades.
How often should I replace the water pump impeller?
For preventative maintenance, it is recommended to inspect the impeller annually and replace it every 1-2 years or 100-200 hours of use. This interval may be shorter if you operate frequently in saltwater or sandy/silty conditions.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials. Production is done in an ISO9002-certified facility, and each batch is inspected for consistent performance.
