Installation Guide
- Disconnect the negative battery cable for safety.
- Remove the lower unit (gearcase) from the outboard motor.
- Locate and unbolt the water pump housing cover, noting the position of the bolts.
- Slide the old impeller off the driveshaft. Observe the direction of the vanes; the new ones must bend the same way.
- Clean any debris or corrosion from the inside of the pump housing and wear plate.
- Lightly grease the new impeller and the inside of the housing with marine grease.
- Install the new impeller by pushing it down onto the driveshaft while turning the shaft clockwise.
- Reinstall the water pump housing and torque the bolts to the manufacturer's specifications.
- Reattach the lower unit to the outboard motor.
- Test the engine using a water supply to confirm a strong and steady stream from the tell-tale outlet.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this impeller fits my engine?
First, check your engine's model, horsepower, and year against the "Compatible Engine Models" table. The most reliable method is to cross-reference the OEM part number (e.g., 395289, 395265) found in your engine's service manual with our part number list.
What are the common signs of a failing water pump impeller?
Key signs include the engine overheating, a weak or non-existent water stream from the tell-tale outlet, or a high-pitched whining sound from the lower unit. Upon inspection, you may find the old impeller's vanes are cracked, brittle, or permanently bent.
How often should I replace the impeller?
For preventative maintenance, it's recommended to replace the impeller every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of use. More frequent replacement may be necessary if you operate in saltwater or sandy/silty conditions.
