Installation Guide
- Disconnect the battery to ensure safety. Locate and remove the bolts securing the lower unit (gearcase).
- Carefully separate the lower unit from the engine's upper housing, disconnecting the shift linkage if required.
- Unbolt and lift the water pump housing cover to access the old impeller. Note the rotational direction of the existing blades.
- Remove the old impeller from the driveshaft. Clean any debris from the housing interior and inspect the wear plate for damage.
- Align the new impeller's keyway with the driveshaft and slide it into place.
- While pushing down, rotate the driveshaft clockwise to correctly bend the impeller blades as you fit it into the housing.
- Reinstall the pump cover and tighten its bolts to the specified torque.
- Reattach the lower unit, ensuring the driveshaft and water tube align. Reconnect the shift linkage and secure the unit with its bolts.
- Once assembled, reconnect the battery. Start the engine with a proper water supply and verify strong water flow from the tell-tale outlet.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this impeller fits my engine?
This impeller is designed for select Johnson/Evinrude V4 & V6 engines (85-235 HP) from 1973-1978. To ensure a correct fit, please check your engine's model and year against the "Compatible Engine Models" list and verify that your old part's number matches one of the cross-reference numbers, such as 389642 or 777212.
What are common signs of a bad water pump impeller?
The most common symptoms are engine overheating at low speeds and a weak or intermittent water stream from the tell-tale indicator. Upon inspection, a failed impeller may have cracked, brittle, or broken blades.
How often should I replace the impeller?
As a key part of preventative maintenance, we recommend replacing your impeller every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of use. If you frequently operate in sandy, silty, or saltwater environments, annual replacement is strongly advised.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials. Production is done in an ISO9002-certified facility, and each batch is inspected for consistent performance.
