Installation Guide
-
Safety First: Disconnect the engine's battery cables before beginning any work.
-
Access the Lower Unit: Remove the bolts that secure the lower unit (gearcase) to the engine's upper casing and carefully lower it.
-
Open Water Pump Housing: Locate the water pump assembly on top of the gearcase. Remove the bolts holding the housing cover in place.
-
Remove Old Impeller: Lift the housing and slide the old impeller off the driveshaft. Note the orientation of the old blades for reference.
-
Clean and Inspect: Clean any debris or corrosion from the inside of the pump housing and the base plate. Inspect for scoring or cracks.
-
Install New Impeller: Lightly lubricate the new impeller. Slide it onto the driveshaft and turn the shaft clockwise to bend the blades into the correct orientation as you press it down into the housing cup.
-
Reassemble: Reinstall the water pump housing, gaskets, and bolts. Secure the lower unit back onto the engine.
-
Test Operation: Reconnect the battery. Start the engine using a flush-muff or in the water to ensure the pump is creating a steady stream of water from the tell-tale outlet.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this impeller fits my specific engine?
The most reliable method is to match your engine's original part number to the numbers in our cross-reference table. You can also consult your owner's manual or use the Johnson/Evinrude Serial Number Guide linked above to identify your model and its required parts.
What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?
Common symptoms include the engine overheating, a weak or non-existent stream of water from the "tell-tale" outlet, or visible cracks and stiffness in the old impeller's rubber blades upon inspection.
How often should I replace my impeller?
For preventative maintenance, it is recommended to inspect your impeller annually and replace it every 1-2 years, depending on usage (especially in saltwater) and storage conditions. Never reuse an old impeller.

This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials. Production is done in an ISO9002-certified facility, and each batch is inspected for consistent performance.
