- Remove the bolts securing the water pump housing to access the old components.
- Slide the old pump housing, impeller, and gaskets off the driveshaft, noting their orientation.
- Thoroughly clean the mounting surfaces to remove any old gasket material or corrosion.
- Install the new Woodruff key into the driveshaft, followed by the new gaskets and insert cartridge.
- Slide the new impeller onto the driveshaft. Rotate it clockwise while pushing down to seat the vanes correctly inside the housing.
- Install the new pump housing and outer plate, then secure them with the new bolts provided in the kit.
- Carefully reinstall the lower unit, ensuring the driveshaft, shift shaft, and water tube are correctly aligned.
- Reconnect the shift linkage and battery. Test the engine in water to confirm a strong, steady stream from the cooling system's tell-tale outlet.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How can I be sure this kit fits my Yamaha F40?
This kit is designed for Yamaha F40 models from 2008–2017. To confirm, check the "Compatible Engine Models" table and match your specific model (e.g., F40TLR) and year. Cross-referencing your old part number with 6BG-W0078-00-00 or 6BG-W0078-01-00 is the best way to ensure an exact match.
What are the signs that my water pump needs to be replaced?
Common signs include the engine overheating at idle or low speeds, a weak or inconsistent stream of water from the tell-tale outlet, or visible damage (cracked or brittle vanes) on the old impeller during a physical inspection.
How often should the water pump impeller be replaced?
As a general maintenance guideline, it is recommended to inspect the impeller annually and replace the kit every 1-2 years or 100-200 hours of use, depending on operating conditions (e.g., frequent use in saltwater or sandy/silty water).
