Installation Guide
-
Disconnect the Battery: Ensure the engine is off and disconnect the battery terminals to prevent accidental starting.
-
Drain the Lower Unit: Remove the drain screw to empty the gearcase oil.
-
Remove the Lower Unit: Unbolt the lower unit (gearcase) from the upper engine housing. This may also require disconnecting the speedometer tube and shift linkage.
-
Access the Water Pump: With the lower unit removed, unbolt and lift the water pump housing to expose the impeller.
-
Inspect and Remove Old Parts: Take note of the old impeller's orientation. Remove the old impeller, gaskets, wear plate, and any other components included in the kit.
-
Clean Mating Surfaces: Thoroughly clean all surfaces where gaskets and seals will sit to ensure a proper seal.
-
Install New Components: Install the new wear plate, gaskets, and impeller. Lightly grease the inside of the pump housing and slide the new impeller in while turning the driveshaft clockwise to seat the vanes correctly.
-
Reassemble the Pump: Secure the water pump housing with the new bolts and torque them to the manufacturer's specifications.
-
Reinstall the Lower Unit: Guide the lower unit back into place, ensuring the driveshaft, water tube, and shift shaft align correctly. Bolt it securely.
-
Refill Gear Oil: Fill the lower unit with the specified marine gear lubricant until it flows from the upper vent screw, then replace both screws.
-
Test the System: Reconnect the battery. Start the engine using a water supply (flushing muffs) and check for a steady stream of water from the tell-tale outlet.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this fits my engine?
First, check the Compatible Engine Models table on this page. Your engine's model, horsepower, and year range should be listed. Second, cross-reference your existing part number with the numbers in the Part Number Cross-Reference table. If you are unsure, use the Yamaha Serial Number Guide linked above or consult your service manual.
What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?
Common signs include a weak or non-existent water stream from the "tell-tale" outlet, engine overheating alarms, or a noticeable decrease in engine performance. A damaged impeller cannot effectively circulate cooling water.
How often should I replace the water pump impeller?
For preventative maintenance, it is recommended to inspect the impeller annually and replace it every 1-2 years depending on usage (hours run) and water conditions (saltwater, sandy, or silty water can accelerate wear). Always replace it if the engine has overheated.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials. Production is done in an ISO9002-certified facility, and each batch is inspected for consistent performance.
How fast do you ship and how much does it cost?
We offer fast global shipping—typically 5–15 days worldwide—and standard shipping is free. Expedited options are available at checkout depending on your location.
What is your warranty and return policy?
This product includes a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use. If something goes wrong, contact our support team with your order details. Returns are accepted within our standard return window (unused & in original condition); please see our policy page or reach out for instructions.
Important Notes
- Verify that the product images and specifications match your original part. If discrepancies exist—even if your model is listed—do not proceed with the purchase.
- This product is an aftermarket replacement part and is not an OEM component.
-
Professional installation is recommended to ensure safety and optimal performance.
