Installation Guide
-
Safety First: Disconnect the battery and remove the spark plug wires to prevent accidental starting.
-
Access the Lower Unit: Drain the gearcase oil. Remove the bolts securing the lower unit (gearcase) to the engine's upper section.
-
Remove the Old Pump: Carefully slide the lower unit down. The water pump housing is typically located on top of the gearcase. Unbolt and remove the housing to access the impeller.
-
Inspect and Clean: Take a photo of the old impeller's orientation. Remove the old impeller, key, gaskets, and wear plate. Clean all surfaces thoroughly, removing any old gasket material or debris.
-
Install the New Impeller: Lightly lubricate the new impeller with soapy water. Install the new impeller key. Slide the new impeller onto the driveshaft, turning the shaft clockwise to bend the vanes in the correct direction.
-
Reassemble: Install the new gaskets and reassemble the pump housing, torquing bolts to the manufacturer's specification.
-
Reattach Lower Unit: Carefully slide the lower unit back into place, ensuring the driveshaft, shift shaft, and water tube align correctly. Fasten the bolts securely.
-
Final Checks: Refill the gearcase with fresh oil. Reconnect the spark plug wires and battery. Test the engine using a water source (flushing muffs) to ensure the pump is working correctly.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this fits my engine?
The most reliable way is to match your engine's serial number against the ranges provided in the "Compatible Engine Models" table. For Mercury, the serial number is the primary identifier. Using the model and year can be a good guide, but the serial number is definitive.
What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?
Common signs include a weak or non-existent water stream from the "telltale" outlet, engine overheating alerts, and, in severe cases, steam from the exhaust. Visible damage to the old impeller, such as cracked, brittle, or missing vanes, also indicates failure.
How often should I replace the water pump impeller?
For preventative maintenance, it is recommended to inspect the impeller annually and replace it every 1-2 years, depending on usage hours and operating conditions (saltwater vs. freshwater). An impeller that has been sitting for a long time can also become stiff and should be replaced.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials. Production is done in an ISO9002-certified facility, and each batch is inspected for consistent performance.
How fast do you ship and how much does it cost?
We offer fast global shipping—typically 5–15 days worldwide—and standard shipping is free. Expedited options are available at checkout depending on your location.
What is your warranty and return policy?
This product includes a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use. If something goes wrong, contact our support team with your order details. Returns are accepted within our standard return window (unused & in original condition); please see our policy page or reach out for instructions.
Important Notes
- Verify that the product images and specifications match your original part. If discrepancies exist—even if your model is listed—do not proceed with the purchase.
- This product is an aftermarket replacement part and is not an OEM component.
- Professional installation is recommended to ensure safety and optimal performance.
