Installation Guide

  1. Safety First: Disconnect the engine's battery and remove the spark plug wire(s).
  2. Access Lower Unit: Place the outboard in neutral and remove the bolts securing the lower unit (gearcase) to the engine leg.
  3. Remove Lower Unit: Carefully lower the gearcase away from the engine. The driveshaft will slide out.
  4. Open Water Pump: Locate the water pump housing on top of the gearcase and remove its mounting bolts. Slide the housing up the driveshaft.
  5. Note Impeller Direction: Before removing the old impeller, observe the direction its blades are curved. The new impeller must be installed with blades facing the same direction.
  6. Remove Old Impeller: Pry or slide the old impeller off the driveshaft. Remove the drive key if present.
  7. Clean and Inspect: Thoroughly clean the inside of the pump housing, the wear plate, and all gasket surfaces. Replace any worn gaskets or seals.
  8. Install New Impeller: Slide the new drive key and impeller onto the driveshaft. To seat it in the housing, push down while rotating the driveshaft in the direction of normal engine operation. This will correctly bend the blades.
  9. Reassemble: Reinstall the water pump housing and torque the bolts to the manufacturer's specifications.
  10. Reattach Lower Unit: Guide the driveshaft back into the powerhead and re-secure the lower unit with its bolts.
  11. Test Operation: Reconnect the battery and attach a water supply (flushing muffs). Start the engine and verify a steady stream of water from the "tell-tale" outlet.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

Q: How do I confirm this impeller fits my specific engine model?

A: The best way is to match your engine's serial number (for Mercury) or model and year against the compatibility tables above. Always cross-reference the OEM part number listed for your model (e.g., 47-161543) with the numbers this part replaces.

Q: What are the common signs of a failing water pump impeller?

A: The most common symptoms are a weak or nonexistent water stream from the engine's tell-tale outlet and the engine overheating, which may trigger an alarm. Reduced engine performance can also be an indicator.

Q: How often should I replace the water pump impeller?

A: As a general rule, it is recommended to replace your impeller every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of use, whichever comes first. However, consult your engine's service manual for the specific maintenance interval.

Q: OEM vs. Aftermarket?

A: This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials. Production is done in an ISO9002-certified facility, and each batch is inspected for consistent performance.

Q: How fast do you ship and how much does it cost?

A: We offer fast global shipping—typically 5–15 days worldwide—and standard shipping is free. Expedited options are available at checkout depending on your location.

Q: What is your warranty and return policy?

A: This product includes a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use. If something goes wrong, contact our support team with your order details. Returns are accepted within our standard return window (unused & in original condition); please see our policy page or reach out for instructions.
