Installation Guide
- Disconnect the battery and remove the engine cover for safety.
- Place the outboard in neutral and remove the mounting bolts securing the lower unit.
- Carefully separate the lower unit from the upper casing. You may need to disconnect the shift linkage.
- Locate the water pump housing on the lower unit and unbolt it.
- Slide the housing up the driveshaft to expose the old impeller. Note the rotational direction of the existing blades.
- Remove the old impeller, woodruff key, and any gaskets or wear plates.
- Thoroughly clean the inside of the housing and the base plate, inspecting for any scoring or damage.
- Install the new wear plate and gasket, applying a light coat of marine grease.
- Slide the new woodruff key into the driveshaft keyway.
- Lightly lubricate the new impeller with a soap-water solution and slide it onto the driveshaft, turning the shaft clockwise to bend the blades correctly.
- Reinstall the water pump housing and torque the bolts to the manufacturer's specification.
- Reassemble the lower unit, reconnect the shift linkage, and test the engine in water to confirm a steady stream from the tell-tale port.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How can I confirm this impeller fits my engine?
This impeller is designed for specific Johnson/Evinrude models ranging from 55 HP to 75 HP, manufactured between 1968 and 1978. To ensure a correct fit, please review the "Compatible Engine Models" table and cross-reference your engine's model, year, and original part number.
What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?
Common symptoms include the engine overheating (especially at idle), a weak or intermittent water stream from the "tell-tale" outlet, or a melted water pump housing. Failure to replace a worn impeller can lead to severe engine damage from overheating.
How often should I replace my impeller?
As a crucial part of preventative maintenance, it is recommended to inspect your impeller annually and replace it every 1-2 years. Replacement frequency depends on usage hours and operating conditions (e.g., saltwater vs. freshwater).
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials. Production is done in an ISO9002-certified facility, and each batch is inspected for consistent performance.
How fast do you ship and how much does it cost?
We offer fast global shipping—typically 5–15 days worldwide—and standard shipping is free. Expedited options are available at checkout depending on your location.
