Easy-to-Miss Differences

  • Big Foot, Command Thrust, High Thrust and Power Thrust lower units are out of scope. These gearcases are physically larger and swing a bigger propeller, so a 13" ring leaves too little clearance around the blade tips.
  • Horsepower alone does not decide fitment. Two 50 HP outboards can carry different gearcases; the 6.5"-7.5" plate-to-shaft dimension and a propeller no larger than 10.5" are what matter.
  • A trim tab under the cavitation plate must come off first. On motors fitted with one, the tab occupies the exact area where the guard seats.
  • This is a drilled installation, not a clamp-on. Six holes per side go through the cavitation plate plus one through the lower skeg, so the mounting is permanent.
  • 25 mph is a design limit, not a suggestion. Above that speed the hydrodynamic load on the ring and on the lower unit rises sharply.
  • Size steps are discrete. A 13" ring is matched to 40-65 HP; the 11" and 14" rings exist because smaller and larger gearcases need different geometry.

Installation Notes

  1. Trim the outboard up and remove the trim tab if one sits under the cavitation plate, since the guard seats in that area.
  2. Hold the guard against the underside of the cavitation plate with equal spacing between the ring and the propeller blade tips.
  3. Slide the guard as far forward on the cavitation plate as the shape allows, which keeps drag and blade clearance balanced.
  4. Drill six holes through the cavitation plate and the guard flange on each side, using the supplied drill bit.
  5. Fit the supplied bolts, washers and nuts finger-tight only, leaving the guard free to align.
  6. Drill the final hole through the lower skeg, fit that bolt, washer and nut, and tighten it fully.
  7. With the skeg fastener seated, tighten the cavitation plate fasteners evenly in an alternating pattern.
  8. Run the engine at low speed first and listen for contact before returning to normal use. Typical fitting time is around 30 minutes.

FAQ

How do I know the 13" guard suits my 40-65 HP outboard?

Measure from the propeller shaft centre to the underside of the cavitation plate: the result should land between 6.5" and 7.5". Your propeller should also be no larger than 10.5" in diameter. Standard gearcases in this power band normally sit inside both figures.

Why are Big Foot and High Thrust models excluded?

Those lower units use a larger gearcase and a larger diameter propeller, so the blade tips would run too close to a 13" ring. A guard sized for an oversize gearcase is the correct route for those engines.

Does the guard change how the boat runs?

Any ring in the propeller stream adds some drag, so acceleration and top speed can shift slightly and handling can feel a little different. The open-lattice form keeps water flowing through the blade disc to limit that effect.

Is there a speed limit once it is installed?

The guard is rated for use up to 25 mph. Beyond that, water load on the ring and on the gearcase mounting points climbs quickly and is outside the design envelope.

Does installation require drilling into the outboard?

Yes. Six holes per side go through the cavitation plate and one goes through the lower skeg, using the drill bit supplied in the box. Plan the position before drilling, as the holes are permanent.

Is this an OEM part?

No. It is an aftermarket bolt-on accessory produced by JLM Marine under SKU 21PG003. It adds protection to your existing gearcase rather than replacing any factory component, so no OEM part number is superseded.

What material is the ring made from, and how does it handle salt water?

It is moulded from high-strength polypropylene, a marine-suitable thermoplastic that absorbs almost no water and resists salt exposure, which is why it is used for impact-loaded parts that live underwater.

How is it shipped?
