Mercury outboard serial numbers provide essential information about the engine's model, features, and year of manufacture. Here's a guide to understanding and locating Mercury outboard serial numbers

Locations

For Mercury Outboard

For most Mercury outboards, the serial number tag is located on the swivel bracket (port or starboard side)

For Mercruiser

For Mercruiser, you can find the engine serial number near the starter, close to the flywheel housing, or on the valve cover or flame arrestor.

For Stern Drive

The serial number is located on the upper driveshaft housing.

For Transom Plate

The serial number is inside the boat or on the upper swivel pin.

Meaning

The top number on the plate is the serial number.
The number directly beneath it is the four-digit year of manufacture.
