Common Questions About Yamaha Outboard Serial Numbers

Q: My serial number plate is missing. How can I identify my outboard?

A: Check for the alternative circular sticker near the starter motor. If that's also missing, look for numbers stamped directly on the engine block. Yamaha dealers can sometimes identify motors based on internal components.

Q: What's the difference between model number and serial number?

A: The model number (like F90LB) identifies the type and specifications of the motor. The serial number is unique to your specific unit and identifies that exact motor.

Q: How can I verify if my used Yamaha outboard's serial number is legitimate?

A: Contact an authorized Yamaha dealer with the serial number. They can verify if it matches their records for that model and hasn't been reported stolen.

Q: Can I determine my outboard's specifications from just the serial number?

A: The serial number alone provides limited information. The complete model code (like F90LB) is more useful for determining specifications.

Q: My serial number is hard to read. What should I do?

A: Try cleaning the plate gently with a soft cloth and mild detergent. Take a photo in good lighting and enhance the image. If still unreadable, check the alternative location or consult a Yamaha dealer.
