Installation Guide
- Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental starting.
- Place the outboard in neutral and remove the bolts securing the lower unit (gearcase).
- Carefully separate the lower unit from the upper housing, disconnecting the shift shaft if necessary.
- Locate the water pump housing on top of the gearcase and remove its mounting bolts.
- Slide the housing up and off the driveshaft to expose the old impeller. Note the rotational direction of the old blades.
- Remove the old impeller and the drive key from the shaft. Clean any debris from the housing and wear plate.
- Install the new drive key and slide the new impeller onto the driveshaft.
- Rotate the driveshaft in its normal direction of operation (typically clockwise) while pushing down on the impeller to correctly fold the blades inside the housing.
- Reinstall the water pump housing and tighten the bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque.
- Reassemble the lower unit to the engine, ensuring the driveshaft, shift shaft, and water tube are correctly aligned.
- Secure the lower unit with its mounting bolts.
- Reconnect the battery, supply water to the engine using flushing muffs, and test run to confirm water is exiting the tell-tale port.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this impeller fits my Yamaha engine?
This impeller is compatible with Yamaha 2-stroke 20HP (1996-1997) and 25HP (1988-2009) outboards, as well as 4-stroke F20 (2018-2021) and F25 (2016-2021) models. Always cross-reference your engine's original part number with 6L2-44352-00-00 or one of the listed aftermarket equivalents to ensure a perfect match.
What are the signs that my water pump impeller needs replacement?
Common signs of a failing impeller include a weak or intermittent water stream from the "tell-tale" outlet, engine overheating alarms, or visible damage like cracks, missing blades, and brittleness discovered during inspection.
How often should I replace the impeller?
As a general guideline, it is recommended to inspect your water pump impeller annually and replace it every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of use. Replacement frequency depends on operating conditions (e.g., saltwater versus freshwater use).
