Installation Guide
-
Safety First: Disconnect the boat's negative battery terminal before starting work.
-
Access the Bellows: Fully tilt the sterndrive up to gain clear access to the transom assembly and shift cable.
-
Locate the Old Bellows: Identify the shift cable bellows where the cable passes through the transom.
-
Remove Clamps: Loosen and remove the hose clamps from both ends of the old bellows.
-
Remove Old Bellows: Carefully slide the old bellows off the shift cable housing and transom fitting. You may need to cut it if it's brittle.
-
Clean Surfaces: Thoroughly clean the mounting surfaces on the transom fitting and cable housing to ensure a good seal.
-
Install New Bellows: Slide the new bellows over the shift cable and into position.
-
Seat Correctly: Ensure the bellows is properly seated in the grooves on both the transom and cable housing ends.
-
Secure Clamps: Attach and tighten the new hose clamps securely at both ends. Do not overtighten.
-
Final Check: Lower the sterndrive and reconnect the battery terminal.
-
Test Operation: Shift the drive in and out of gear to ensure the cable moves freely without any binding or stretching of the new bellows.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I know if this shift cable bellows is leaking?
Signs of a leak include water in the bilge area, especially after the boat has been in the water. You may also notice visible cracking, perishing, or stiffness in the old bellows material upon inspection.
What happens if a cracked bellows is not replaced?
A failed bellows will allow water to penetrate the transom. This can lead to serious corrosion of the internal shift cable, causing shifting difficulty, and can also lead to water damage within the hull.
Can I use this bellows for my exhaust or u-joint?
No. This part is specifically designed for the smaller diameter of the shift cable. Using it for the exhaust or U-joint bellows would be incorrect and lead to immediate failure. Use only the correct bellows part for each application.
