Installation Guide
Professional installation is recommended. The following are general steps and may not apply to all models.
-
Drain Gearcase Oil: Position the outboard vertically and remove the upper and lower gearcase drain screws to drain the oil completely.
-
Remove Propeller: Straighten the cotter pin, remove the propeller nut, and slide the propeller and thrust washer off the shaft.
-
Remove Bearing Housing: Unscrew the bolts securing the propeller shaft bearing housing and carefully pull it out. The oil seal is located within this housing.
-
Extract Old Seal: Carefully pry the old seal out of the housing using a seal puller or a flat-head screwdriver. Take care not to scratch the housing surfaces. Note the orientation of the seal before removal.
-
Clean Housing: Thoroughly clean the inside of the bearing housing where the new seal will sit. Remove any old sealant, dirt, or corrosion.
-
Install New Seal: Lightly coat the outer edge and inner lip of the new seal with marine grease. Press the new seal squarely into the housing until it is fully seated. Use a socket or seal driver of the appropriate size to ensure even pressure.
-
Reassemble: Reinstall the bearing housing, propeller, and related hardware in the reverse order of removal. Be sure to use new gaskets or O-rings where required. Torque all fasteners to the manufacturer's specifications.
-
Refill Gear Lube: Fill the gearcase with the recommended marine gear lubricant from the bottom drain hole until it flows out of the top hole. Reinstall both drain screw gaskets and screws.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
Q: How do I confirm this seal fits my engine?
A: The best way is to check your original part number. Compare it with the numbers in our "Part Number Cross-Reference" table. You should also verify your engine's model and year in the "Compatible Engine Models" list. Visually comparing the old seal to our product images and dimensions is also a good final check.
Q: What are the common signs of a failing propeller shaft oil seal?
A: The most common signs are visible gear oil leaking from the propeller area or discovering water in your gear lube when you drain it (it will look milky or cloudy). A failed seal can allow oil out and water in, leading to significant gearcase damage if not addressed.
Q: Where exactly is this seal installed?
A: This seal is pressed into the propeller shaft bearing housing in the lower unit (gearcase). It seals the propeller shaft as it exits the housing, preventing gear lube from escaping and water from entering.
Q: OEM vs. Aftermarket?
A: This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials. Production is done in an ISO9002-certified facility, and each batch is inspected for consistent performance.
Q: How fast do you ship and how much does it cost?
A: We offer fast global shipping—typically 5–15 days worldwide—and standard shipping is free. Expedited options are available at checkout depending on your location.
Q: What is your warranty and return policy?
A: This product includes a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use. If something goes wrong, contact our support team with your order details. Returns are accepted within our standard return window (unused & in original condition); please see our policy page or reach out for instructions.
