- Remove the lower unit (outdrive) to gain access to the lower shift shaft and lever assembly area.
- Carefully disconnect the old shift linkage and note its orientation.
- Remove the old shift lever, bushings, and seals from the housing. Take care not to scratch the housing surfaces.
- Thoroughly clean the recess in the gear housing where the components were located.
- Install the new oil seals and bushings, applying a light coat of marine-grade grease.
- Install the new shift lever assembly into position.
- Reconnect the shift linkage, ensuring it moves freely and is correctly aligned.
- Reinstall the lower unit using a new gasket kit.
- Refill the sterndrive with the manufacturer-specified gear lube to the correct level.
- After reassembly, test the shifting operation (forward, neutral, reverse) before operating the vessel in water.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this fits my MerCruiser drive?
Check your drive's serial number. This kit is designed for MC-I, R, MR, and Alpha One drives with serial numbers ranging from 6225577 through 0D469858. It also fits all Alpha One Gen 2 drives with serial numbers 0D469859 and higher.
What are the signs my shift lever needs to be replaced?
Common symptoms of a failing shift lever include difficulty shifting between gears, the drive slipping out of gear, grinding noises during shifts, or excessive play in the shift mechanism. Visual inspection may also reveal corrosion, damage, or wear on the lever and its seals.
