Installation Guide
This is a bolt-on, do-it-yourself installation that typically takes less than 10 minutes. A minimum of 2-3 inches (51-76 mm) of the original skeg is required to mount the SkegGuard.
- Ensure the engine is off and the drive is tilted into a raised position for safe access.
- Thoroughly clean the remaining portion of the skeg, removing any marine growth, dirt, or debris.
- Slide the SkegGuard over the skeg. Check for a snug fit. If the skeg is bent, it may need to be straightened first.
- With the SkegGuard in place, use the pre-drilled holes in the guard as a template to mark drilling locations on the skeg.
- Remove the SkegGuard and carefully drill through the skeg using the marks as a guide.
- Apply a small amount of the included Loctite to the threads of each mounting bolt.
- Position the SkegGuard back onto the skeg, align the holes, and insert the bolts.
- Tighten the self-locking nuts and bolts securely. Do not overtighten, as this can damage the skeg.
- Once installed, confirm the SkegGuard is rigid and does not move.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
Q: How much of my original skeg needs to be left for installation?
A: You need at least 2-3 inches (51-76 mm) of your original skeg remaining to properly drill and mount the SkegGuard.
Q: Can I install this to protect a new or undamaged skeg?
A: Yes, the SkegGuard is designed to work on both broken skegs and new/intact skegs, providing excellent protection against future damage from rocks, ramps, and debris.
Q: How does the skeg guard prevent water damage and corrosion?
A: It features a built-in drain hole that allows water to escape, preventing it from collecting inside and causing corrosion or damage from freezing in cold climates.
Q: What tools are required for installation?
A: Installation requires common hand tools, including a drill and wrenches to tighten the bolts. The necessary self-locking hardware is included.
Q: OEM vs. Aftermarket?
A: This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials. Production is done in an ISO9002-certified facility, and each batch is inspected for consistent performance.
